    Biography

Birth of Domenico Cassinelli in Graveglia, his entry into the seminary and then the Passionists under the name Norberto di Santa Maria dell'Orto.

Domenico Cassinelli was born on April 12, 1829 (or April 13) in Graveglia, a frazione of the municipality of Carasco, near Chiavari, in the province of Genoa (Liguria, Italy). Coming from a wealthy and deeply Christian family, he was nicknamed "il signorino" in his village. In 1843, he entered the diocesan seminary of Chiavari. Desiring a life of greater penance, his meeting with the Passionist preacher Tommaso Lubrani guided his vocation. On July 8, 1847, he joined the Passionist convent of L'Angelo, near Lucca in Tuscany. He made his solemn profession there on July 24, 1848, under the name Norberto di Santa Maria dell'Orto, and was subsequently ordained a priest on December 20, 1851, in Camerino by the local archbishop.

    Life and work

Father Norberto becomes the spiritual director of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows and assumes significant responsibilities within his congregation.

After his ordination, Father Norberto studied in Recanati. In 1854, he was sent to the convent of Morrovalle as vice-master of novices. It was there that he met the young novice Francesco Possenti (the future Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows) in 1856, becoming his spiritual director and closest friend. He accompanied him to Pievetorina in 1858 and then to Isola del Gran Sasso in 1859, guiding his soul with wisdom until his premature death in 1862. From 1862 to 1867, faced with the laws suppressing religious orders, he assumed heavy responsibilities as a consultor and then as provincial to watch over the dispersed religious. In 1878, he was appointed second general consultor in Rome alongside the superior general Bernardo Maria di Gesù. He served again as provincial from 1887 to 1893, then as superior in Casale in 1896, dedicating himself to spiritual direction and preaching.

    Journey toward holiness

Guardian of the memory of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, Father Norberto wrote his first biography and attended his beatification before passing away in 1911.

Father Norberto was the primary witness and guardian of the memory of Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. Two months after the latter's death, he wrote the very first systematic biography of the young religious, titled "Cenni della vita e virtù di Gabriele". In 1908, nearly 80 years old, he had the joy of attending the solemn beatification of Gabriel in Rome by Pope Pius X. He then retired to the convent of Recanati, where he piously passed away on June 29, 1911 (or June 20, 1911), comforted by the papal blessing and surrounded by portraits of Gabriel and Saint Paul of the Cross.
