    Biography

    The youth of Claude-Étienne Pernet, his studies, his doubts regarding the priesthood, and his entry into the Augustinians of the Assumption.

    Claude-Étienne Pernet was born on July 23, 1824, in Vellexon, in Haute-Saône. The son of Claude-Louis Pernet and Magdeleine Cordelet, he lost his father at the age of fourteen. Supported by Abbé Guillaume, he studied in Membrey, Luxeuil, Vesoul, and Besançon. Overcome by anxiety regarding the priesthood, he left the seminary at 19 and worked as a tutor and teaching assistant. Arriving in Paris in 1849, he found refuge in prayer at Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. Guided by Saint Marie-Eugénie of Jesus toward Father Emmanuel d'Alzon, he entered the novitiate of the Augustinians of the Assumption on October 19, 1849. He took his vows on December 25, 1850, and was ordained a priest on April 3, 1858, by Bishop Jean-Jacques Nanquette. He became aware of the distress of working-class families in Nîmes.

    On July 17, 1865, Father Étienne Pernet founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Assumption with Antoinette Fage (Mother Marie de Jésus) in Paris. The religious sisters served as free home-nursing caregivers for the poor to preserve the unity of households. His life was marked by historical events: he was a theologian at the First Vatican Council in 1870, a military chaplain during the Franco-Prussian War (imprisoned in Metz), and arrested by the Communards during the Paris Commune in 1871. He established the motherhouse at 57 Rue Violet in Paris. The work expanded to Perpignan (1878), England (1880), the United States (1891), and Rome (1896). In 1896, he was received by Pope Leo XIII, and the congregation received its decree of approval on April 2, 1897.
