    Biography

Born in Rome in 1882, his youth was marked by the loss of his father and a distancing from the faith, followed by a radical conversion in 1921 at the church of Santa Maria Odigitria.

Arnaldo Canepa was born in Rome on September 24, 1882, into a wealthy family originally from the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. The son of Giacomo Canepa, an innkeeper, and Maria Giacomini, he lost his father in 1896. His mother then sent him to Vallerano, in the province of Viterbo, where he received his early education from the parish priest. He subsequently continued his studies at colleges in Alatri and Spoleto. Returning to Rome, the young man drifted away from religious practice and allowed himself to be influenced by the prevailing anticlericalism of the Roman bourgeoisie of the time. He engaged successfully in business and commerce, speculating on the stock exchange and managing a renowned restaurant near the Baths of Diocletian. In May 1921, when he was nearly forty years old, he entered the church of Santa Maria Odigitria in Rome by chance. After going to confession, he experienced a radical spiritual conversion that definitively transformed the course of his life.

    Life and Work

Ecclesial commitment, dedication to the poor children of Quadraro, abandonment of his possessions, and the founding of the Centro Oratori Romani (COR) in 1945.

From 1922, Arnaldo Canepa became actively involved within the Church. He entered the Franciscan Third Order and joined the Marian Congregation and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. He became a catechist at the Santa Maria degli Angeli parish, where he also participated in the creation of a scout group and Catholic Action.

Deeply moved by the material and spiritual poverty of the children living in the Roman suburbs, particularly in the disadvantaged neighborhood of Quadraro, which he began frequenting in 1924, he decided to devote himself entirely to their Christian education. On Good Friday in 1928, in a chapel at the Santa Sabina convent, he committed himself along with a dozen young laypeople to dedicating all his Sundays to the service of the children of Quadraro.

In 1931, he opened his first festive oratory at the Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio parish. Although forced to temporarily close this space due to pressure from the Fascist regime, his work expanded and inspired other initiatives throughout the Roman periphery. To support this work, he abandoned his professional activities and gradually divested himself of all his personal possessions to live in evangelical poverty inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi.

In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, he founded the Centro Oratori Romani (COR). This association, conceived as a federation of parish oratories, aimed to offer children a setting for welcome, catechesis, and human and spiritual growth. The COR was structured around a specific educational method and quickly became a pillar of youth ministry in the Diocese of Rome.

    Journey toward holiness

Retirement in destitution at the Santa Maria della Fiducia clinic, life of prayer, and death in Rome in 1966.

At the end of his life, Arnaldo Canepa went through a period of crisis and controversy, both internal and external to ecclesial circles, which affected the activity of the oratories. Having grown old, he chose to retire to the Roman clinic of Santa Maria della Fiducia (Our Lady of Confidence). He spent his final years there in the destitution of a small room, dedicating himself to the assiduous prayer of the Rosary and to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

He died in Rome on November 2, 1966, following a cerebral congestion. On November 23, 1989, his remains were transferred to the church of Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio al Quadraro, the historic site of the foundation of his first oratory.

After the examination of the Positio by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis authorized, on May 20, 2023, the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, thus conferring upon him the title of Venerable.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

Spirituality founded on Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Philip Neri, and Saint John Bosco. Continuation of his mission by the Centro Oratori Romani.

The spirituality of Arnaldo Canepa rests on three major pillars: the poverty and humility of Saint Francis of Assisi, the joy and oratory pedagogy of Saint Philip Neri, and the preventive method of education of Saint John Bosco. He conceived the oratory not only as a place of leisure, but above all as a space for the sanctification and evangelization of the little ones.

Today, the Centro Oratori Romani (COR) actively continues his mission in the diocese of Rome, federating numerous parish oratories and training generations of catechists and lay educators according to the intuitions of its founder.
