    Biography

Birth of Johannes Keller in Bavaria, his studies and his entry into the Augustinians under the name Pius.

Johannes Keller was born on September 30, 1825, in Ballingshausen, Bavaria (Germany), into a family of farmers. His parents, Johannes and Margarethe Keller, quickly discerned his intellectual aptitudes and supported his studies at the Augustinian gymnasium in Münnerstadt, and later at the University of Würzburg, where he studied theology and classical philology. In 1846, he entered the diocesan seminary of Würzburg and was ordained a priest in 1849 by Bishop Georg Anton von Stahl. That same year, he was appointed as a teacher at the gymnasium in Münnerstadt. On August 28, 1849, the feast day of Saint Augustine, he experienced a significant spiritual moment during Mass, which prompted him to join the Augustinians. He began his novitiate at the end of 1849 and took the religious name Pius.

    Life and Work

Restoration of the Augustinian province of Bavaria-Germany by Pius Keller and his role as an educator.

At the time of Pius Keller's entry into the Order of Saint Augustine, the situation of the German province was critical, greatly weakened by the waves of secularization of the early 19th century. The order counted only two active monasteries in Germany: Münnerstadt (with nine fathers and six lay brothers) and Würzburg (with two priests and four lay brothers). Pius Keller dedicated his entire life to the spiritual and material restoration of his order. Elected prior of the monastery of Münnerstadt in 1853 at only 28 years of age, he subsequently assumed various positions of high responsibility, notably those of commissary general and assistant general. His major work culminated in 1895 with the official restoration of the Augustinian province of Bavaria-Germany (bayerisch-deutsche Augustinerprovinz), of which he became the first provincial prior, a position he held until 1902. Under his energetic leadership, the province experienced a spectacular renaissance: while it counted only 11 religious spread across two houses at his entry, it gathered nearly 100 brothers in five monasteries by 1900. He oversaw the re-establishment of monastic discipline, the observance of the Rule, and founded several monasteries. Alongside his government duties, he continued his mission as a teacher at the Münnerstadt gymnasium until 1897, teaching Latin, Greek, German, French, and religion. His students described him as a demanding, fair, and deeply benevolent educator.
