Francesco Chiesa was born on April 2, 1874, in Montà d'Alba, in the province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region of Italy. He was the son of Lorenzo Chiesa and Teresa Alai. Raised in a deeply Christian family, he manifested from a very young age a marked inclination for the spiritual life and the service of the Church. In October 1886, at the age of twelve, he entered the seminary of Alba. A brilliant student, he distinguished himself there by his intelligence, his discipline, and his profound interior life. He was ordained a priest on October 11, 1896, at the age of 22 and a half (benefiting from an age dispensation), by Msgr. Giuseppe Francesco Re, Bishop of Alba.

    Life and Work

University studies, teaching at the seminary, spiritual direction of Giacomo Alberione, and pastoral ministry in Alba.

After his ordination, Francesco Chiesa pursued brilliant university studies and obtained three doctorates: in theology in Genoa in 1897, in canon and civil law (in utroque jure) in Turin in 1900, and in philosophy in Rome in 1901. Endowed with vast culture, he mastered several languages, including French, Spanish, German, and English. He became a professor at the seminary of Alba, where he taught numerous disciplines such as philosophy, dogmatic theology, law, patrology, and sociology. It was in this setting that he met the young seminarian Giacomo Alberione (the future Blessed James Alberione) in 1900. Francesco Chiesa became his spiritual director and confessor, a role of accompaniment he would exercise for forty-six years. He was the first to receive Alberione's confidences regarding his inspiration to found a work dedicated to evangelization through the press and mass communication media. Through his theological advice, discernment, and constant support, Canon Chiesa accompanied the birth and development of the Pauline Family (Famiglia Paolina), to the point of being considered its "godfather" or spiritual co-founder. He also taught the first members of the Society of Saint Paul. Parallel to his teaching, Francesco Chiesa was appointed canon pastor of the parish of Saints Cosmas and Damian (Santi Cosma e Damiano) in Alba in 1913 (making his official entry on September 21, 1913). He guided this community with immense pastoral dedication for thirty-three years, until his death. He developed numerous works there: religious instruction for children and adults, the training of catechists, the Apostleship of Prayer, and above all Catholic Action (Azione Cattolica), of which his parish became a model for the entire diocese. He was also appointed assistant and president of the diocesan council of Catholic Action of Alba. In 1932, he was appointed rector of the seminary of Alba. The following year, in 1933, following the death of Msgr. Giuseppe Francesco Re, the Holy See appointed him apostolic administrator of the diocese of Alba, a position he assumed with wisdom until the appointment of the new bishop, Msgr. Luigi Maria Grassi. During the Second World War, Canon Chiesa found himself on the front line supporting his population in the face of bombings, shortages, and executions, bringing spiritual and material comfort to his parishioners and protecting the members of the Pauline Family. He was also a prolific author, publishing numerous theological treatises, works of spirituality, and manuals for the training of catechists and laypeople.
