Biography
The youth of Youssef Nehmé in Lebanon and his entry into the novitiate of the Lebanese Maronite Order.
Youssef (Joseph) Nehmé was born on March 8, 1889, in the village of Lehfed, located in the Jbeil region of Lebanon. He was the youngest of six children born to Estephan Bou Haykal Nehmé and Christina Badawi Hanna Khaled, into a deeply pious Maronite family. He was baptized on March 15, 1889, in the Church of Our Lady of Lehfed. From his childhood, Youssef manifested a pronounced taste for recollection, prayer, and solitude. He helped his family with field work and tending to livestock, experiencing this contact with nature as a preparation for his future monastic vocation. His father passed away in 1903 when he was only 14 years old. In 1905, at the age of 16, he asked his mother for permission to enter the novitiate of the Lebanese Maronite Order at the Monastery of Saints Cyprian and Justina in Kfifan. He took the religious name of Estéphan (Stephen), in homage to his father and the patron saint of his village. He pronounced his monastic vows on August 23, 1907, and his perpetual vows on April 13, 1924.
Life and Work
The life of labor, charity, and devotion of Brother Estéphan within various Maronite monasteries.
As a lay brother (or professed brother), Brother Estéphan did not receive priestly ordination but dedicated himself entirely to manual tasks and community life. He worked with fervor in the fields, gardens, and vineyards of the various monasteries to which he was sent. He also acquired great skill in carpentry, masonry, and construction work. During his religious life, he resided in several monasteries of the Lebanese Maronite Order, notably at Our Lady of Mayfouq, Saint Anthony in Houb, Saint Maron in Annaya, Mar Shalita in Kattara, and Our Lady of Help in Jbeil (where he stayed from 1930 to February 1938), before returning to the monastery of Kfifan. During the First World War and the terrible famine that struck Mount Lebanon, Brother Estéphan distinguished himself through his heroic charity. In charge of the distribution of food at the convent, he shared the monastery's resources without measure with the poor and the starving. In 1938, he was sent on a mission to the monastery of Our Lady of Mayfouq to help resolve a land dispute. Thanks to his wisdom and gentleness, he managed to restore peace. It was during this mission that he contracted a severe fever due to sunstroke while performing arduous work in intense heat. Upon returning to the monastery of Kfifan, his condition worsened rapidly, progressing to a cerebral hemorrhage. He passed away peacefully on August 30, 1938, at the age of 49.
Path to Holiness
The discovery of his intact body and the official introduction of his cause for canonization.
The reputation for holiness of Brother Estéphan Nehmé grew rapidly after his death. The faithful began to flock to his tomb at the monastery of Kfifan, and numerous graces were reported through his intercession. In 1951, thirteen years after his death, during the opening of the common tomb to bury another monk, the monks discovered with astonishment that the body of Brother Estéphan was perfectly intact and incorrupt. His body was then transferred to a specific tomb at the monastery of Kfifan, which became a major place of pilgrimage. On August 30, 2001, the General Chapter of the Lebanese Maronite Order decided to officially introduce his cause for canonization. The diocesan inquiry was opened on November 27, 2001, in the diocese of Batroun and closed on December 17, 2001. The file was then transmitted to Rome. On December 17, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI signed the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, thereby declaring him Venerable.
Beatification and canonization
The recognition of a miracle and the solemn celebration of his beatification in 2010.
The miracle required for his beatification was officially approved by the Holy See. It concerns the scientifically unexplained healing of a patient suffering from a serious condition, obtained through his intercession. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on Sunday, June 27, 2010, on the esplanade of the Monastery of Saints Cyprian and Justina in Kfifan, Lebanon. The solemn Mass was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, representing Pope Benedict XVI, in the presence of the Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, and more than 60,000 faithful. On the same day, during the Angelus prayer in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI warmly greeted the beatification of Estéphan Nehmé, presenting him as a model of monastic life lived in contemplative prayer and hidden manual labor. His liturgical feast is set for August 30, the day of his birth into heaven.
Spirituality and legacy
The motto "God sees me" and the continuous devotion to Blessed Estéphan Nehmé.
The spirituality of Blessed Estéphan Nehmé is based on an extraordinary evangelical simplicity and a constant union with God in the midst of the humblest daily activities. His entire life is summarized by his constant motto, which he loved to repeat: "God sees me" ("Allah yarani"). This acute awareness of the continual presence of God transformed his manual labor into an incessant prayer. Brother Estéphan was neither a great theologian nor a hermit withdrawn from the world, but a simple farm worker and craftsman who sanctified daily work through love and obedience. He saw God in the beauty of creation and cared for the land with respect and devotion. His legacy remains alive in Lebanon and in the Maronite Church, where he is venerated as the fourth great model of holiness of the Lebanese Maronite Order of the modern era, alongside Saint Charbel Makhlouf, Saint Rafqa, and Saint Nimatullah Kassab Al-Hardini. His incorrupt body, still visible at the monastery of Kfifan, continues to attract many pilgrims.
