Biography
The youth of Adolph Kolping, from his shoemaker apprenticeship to his priestly ordination.
Adolph Kolping was born on December 8, 1813, in Kerpen, near Cologne, into a modest family. He was the fourth of five children of Peter Kolping, a shepherd, and Anna Maria Zurheyden. Despite very limited financial resources, his parents ensured he received a basic school education. However, his family's poverty forced him to leave school at the age of 13 to work. He then began an apprenticeship with a master shoemaker in Kerpen.
For ten years, he practiced this trade as a shoemaker, working as an itinerant journeyman in various localities in the region, notably in Sindorf, Düren, Lechenich, and then in Cologne. It was in this large industrial city that he was deeply marked and shocked by the material, moral, and spiritual misery in which young workers and artisans lived, left to their own devices following the collapse of the traditional guild system. This observation awakened in him a profound priestly vocation.
Thanks to the financial support of benefactors who believed in his vocation, he was able to resume his studies at the age of 24. In 1837, he entered the gymnasium (Marzellengymnasium in Cologne) and obtained his baccalaureate. He then pursued studies in theology and philosophy in Munich, Bonn, and Cologne. On April 13, 1845, he was ordained a priest in the Minorite Church (Minoritenkirche) in Cologne.
Life and Work
Adolph Kolping's commitment to young workers and the founding of the Journeymen's Association.
After his ordination, Father Kolping was appointed vicar and religion teacher in Elberfeld (now a district of Wuppertal), a heavily industrialized city. There, he was confronted head-on with the social ravages of the Industrial Revolution. It was there that he discovered the Young Men's Association (Gesellenverein) founded shortly before by the schoolteacher Johann Gregor Breuer. Elected spiritual director (praeses) of this association in 1847, he immediately understood the potential of this structure to provide a concrete response to the distress of young workers.
In 1849, he was appointed vicar of Cologne Cathedral. On May 6, 1849, he founded the Catholic Journeymen's Association of Cologne (Kölner Gesellenverein). His work was based on the principle of mutual aid and the integral development of the person. The "Kolping Houses" (Kolpinghäuser) that he created offered young traveling journeymen decent housing, a family atmosphere, professional and general training, as well as spiritual and moral guidance.
The initiative met with resounding success. In 1850, the various local associations grouped together to form the Rhineland Journeymen's Federation (Rheinischer Gesellenbund), which would give birth to the international "Kolpingwerk" organization.
Alongside his field work, Adolph Kolping deployed intense activity as a journalist and publisher to disseminate his social ideas. In 1854, he founded the weekly Rheinische Volksblätter (Rhenish People's Journal), which became one of the most influential Catholic press organs of its time. In 1862, he was appointed rector of the Minorite Church in Cologne and raised to the rank of Monsignor (Prelate of His Holiness) by Pope Pius IX.
At his death on December 4, 1865, in Cologne, the organization already counted more than 400 local associations throughout the world, bringing together approximately 24,000 members.
Path to holiness
The reputation of holiness of Adolph Kolping and the opening of his cause for beatification.
The reputation of holiness of Adolph Kolping was established during his lifetime due to his tireless dedication to the working classes and his heroic charity (he had notably volunteered to care for the sick during a cholera epidemic in Cologne). After his death, his tomb in the Minorite Church became a place of constant pilgrimage.
The informative process for his beatification was officially opened in the Archdiocese of Cologne on March 21, 1934, under the pontificate of Pope Pius XI. After several decades of historical and theological research, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints published the Positio in 1988. The heroic virtues of the Servant of God were officially recognized on May 13, 1989, by Pope John Paul II, conferring upon him the title of Venerable.
Beatification and canonization
The recognition of miracles and the beatification of Adolph Kolping by John Paul II.
To allow for his beatification, the examination of miracles attributed to his intercession was successfully conducted. The process focused on two extraordinary and sudden healings that occurred after serious illnesses or accidents for which medicine offered no further hope, following fervent prayers and novenas addressed to Adolph Kolping. On January 24, 1990, the medical board of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints declared these healings scientifically inexplicable. The decree confirming the miracle was signed by Pope John Paul II on January 22, 1991.
The solemn beatification ceremony was celebrated by Pope John Paul II on October 27, 1991, in Saint Peter's Square in Rome, in the presence of tens of thousands of members of the Kolping Society who had come from all over the world. His liturgical feast was set for December 4, the anniversary of his death.
Today, the Kolping International association is actively pursuing the steps toward his canonization, notably through a global petition addressed to the Pope to request a dispensation from the second required miracle, or through the collection of new testimonies of favors obtained through his intercession.
Spirituality and Legacy
Adolph Kolping's spirituality of action and his role as a precursor to the social doctrine of the Church.
Adolph Kolping's spirituality is deeply incarnated and oriented towards action. For him, the Christian faith must not be limited to private prayer, but must actively transform social reality. He summarized this vision with his famous maxim: "Let us show our Christian life in an ever more practical way, and the present will be better and the future brighter."
His action was based on four fundamental pillars for the development of young people: being a committed Christian, a competent professional, a good family man, and a responsible citizen. He placed paramount importance on the family, which he considered the foundation of society and human life.
Adolph Kolping is recognized today as one of the great precursors of the social doctrine of the Church, having prepared the ground for the publication of the famous encyclical Rerum Novarum by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. His legacy is immense: the Kolping work (Kolpingwerk / Kolping International) is now active in more than 60 countries around the world and has hundreds of thousands of members, continuing his work of education, vocational training, and international solidarity.
