Biography
The youth, formation, and priestly ordination of Louis Brisson in Troyes.
Louis Alexandre Alphonse Brisson was born on June 23, 1817, in Plancy, France. The only son of Toussaint Grégoire Brisson and Marie-Savine Corrard, he grew up in a devout family. From his childhood, he showed a keen interest in the natural sciences as well as an early piety. He entered the minor seminary of Troyes in 1831, then continued his theological studies at the major seminary of the same city, where he taught physical and natural sciences even before his ordination. He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1840, for the Diocese of Troyes. In 1841, he was appointed chaplain of the Visitation Monastery of Troyes, a position he would hold for more than forty years. It was there that he met Mother Marie de Sales Chappuis, superior of the monastery, who would exert a major spiritual influence on his life. At the end of his life, facing French anti-clerical laws, he retired to his birthplace in Plancy, where he passed away peacefully on February 2, 1908, at the age of 90.
Life and Work
The social commitment of Louis Brisson and the foundation of the Oblate Sisters and Oblate Fathers of Saint Francis de Sales.
The pastoral work of Louis Brisson stands as a pioneering contribution to social Catholicism and popular education. Appalled by the precarious living conditions of young girls working in the textile factories of Troyes, he opened a reception center in 1858 called the "Work of Saint Francis de Sales." To ensure the sustainability of this work, he founded the congregation of the Oblate Sisters of Saint Francis de Sales in 1866, with the help of Saint Léonie Aviat (Mother Françoise de Sales). Encouraged by Mother Marie de Sales Chappuis, he accepted in 1869 to take over the direction of the Saint-Bernard College in Troyes. To support this educational work, he founded the congregation of the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales (priests and brothers), whose first members took their vows on August 27, 1876. In addition to his activities as a founder, Father Brisson was a brilliant scientific mind and notably designed an astronomical clock of remarkable precision.
Journey toward holiness
The beatification process of Louis Brisson and the recognition of a miracle in Ecuador.
The cause for the beatification of Louis Brisson officially opened at the diocesan level in Troyes on February 11, 1938. Pope Benedict XVI promulgated the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues on December 19, 2009, conferring upon him the title of Venerable. The miracle accepted for his beatification concerns the unexplained healing of an eight-year-old Ecuadorian boy, Carlitos Peñaherrera, which occurred in 1953 in Guayaquil. The child's foot had been severely crushed by a tractor wheel. Following a novena of prayers addressed to Father Brisson by the Oblate Sisters, the wound healed completely without any lasting effects. The diocesan inquiry into this miracle took place in Ecuador in 1981. The medical commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved the scientifically inexplicable nature of this healing on February 10, 2011, followed by the theological commission on June 7, 2011.
Beatification and canonization

The solemn beatification ceremony was celebrated on September 22, 2012, at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Troyes. It was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, representing Pope Benedict XVI. During the reading of the apostolic letter, his liturgical feast was set for October 12.
Spirituality and Heritage
The Salesian spirituality of Louis Brisson and the expansion of his congregations.
The spirituality of Louis Brisson is entirely imbued with the "Salesian gentleness" inherited from Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane de Chantal. It rests on Christian optimism, simplicity, humility, and the constant search for the will of God through daily duties. Its fundamental principle lies in active charity: "We have no other principle than charity." Blessed Louis Brisson leaves behind a dual religious and social heritage. The two congregations he founded developed rapidly internationally (Europe, the Americas, Africa).
