    Biography

Youth, formation, and priestly ordination of Basile Moreau in the Sarthe region.

Basile-Antoine Marie Moreau was born on February 11, 1799, in Laigné-en-Belin, in the Sarthe department (France). The ninth of fourteen children, he grew up in a deeply Christian farming household. After feeling the call to the priesthood, he entered the seminary of Le Mans in 1816 and was ordained a priest on August 12, 1821, at the age of 22. He was subsequently sent to Paris to deepen his theological studies with the Sulpicians. Upon his return to Le Mans in 1823, he taught philosophy, dogma, and Holy Scripture at the seminary for thirteen years, leaving a profound mark on his students through his piety and erudition.

    Life and Work

The foundation of the Congregation of Holy Cross, its expansion, and the trials of the founder's final years.

In 1835, Basile Moreau organized a group of auxiliary priests to preach parish missions. That same year, Bishop Bouvier entrusted him with the direction of the Brothers of Saint Joseph, founded in 1820 by Father Jacques-François Dujarié. On March 1, 1837, through the Fundamental Act of Union, he united these two groups to create the Association of Holy Cross, named after the suburb of Le Mans. In 1838, he gathered women to provide domestic services, laying the foundations for the Marianites of Holy Cross, who were joined in 1841 by Léocadie Gascoin (Mother Marie of the Seven Dolors). On August 15, 1840, he pronounced his religious vows with his companions. In 1857, Pope Pius IX officially approved the Congregation of Holy Cross. Despite rapid international expansion (Algeria, United States, Canada, Bengal), a painful period of internal dissension and financial difficulties began in 1855, leading him to resign from his position as Superior General in 1866. He spent his final years humbly preaching in the surrounding parishes before passing away on January 20, 1873, in Le Mans.

    Beatification and canonization

The miraculous healing of Laurette Comtois and the celebration of the beatification in 2007.

The beatification of Basile Moreau is based on the miraculous healing of Laurette Comtois, a Canadian from Montreal who was suffering from severe pleurisy in her left lung in June 1948. While a pleural puncture was scheduled, the prayers of the patient, her family, and the Sisters of the Holy Cross, accompanied by the application of a relic of Father Moreau, led to her complete and instantaneous healing during the night of June 17 to 18, 1948. The decree recognizing this miracle was promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI on April 28, 2006. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on September 15, 2007, in Le Mans by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI.
