Rita Lopes de Almeida was born on March 5, 1848, in Casalmedinho, Portugal, into a deeply Christian family. Despite the anticlerical context of the 19th century in Portugal, marked by the prohibition of admitting new novices, she felt a pressing call to the consecrated life.
