    Biography

The life of Gaetana Sterni, marked by early family trials, widowhood at sixteen, and her entry into the Canossian Sisters before having to care for her family.

Gaetana Sterni was born on June 26, 1827, in Cassola, in the province of Vicenza, Italy. She was the daughter of Giovanni Battista Sterni, administrator of the properties of the noble Venetian Mora family, and Giovanna Chiuppani. In 1835, the family moved to Bassano del Grappa. Shortly thereafter, a series of tragedies struck the household: her older sister Margherita died at the age of 18, and then her father passed away on May 28, 1838, after a serious illness. Her brother Francesco left home to become an actor, leaving the family in a precarious financial situation. Gaetana had to grow up quickly to help her mother cope with daily difficulties.

Endowed with great maturity and deep piety, she was asked in marriage by Liberale Conte, a young widower and father of three children. Despite the opposition of her guardian, she accepted and married him in November 1842, when she was not yet sixteen years old. She proved to be a devoted wife and a loving mother to her husband's children. However, after only eight months of marriage, while she was expecting a child, her husband died suddenly. A few months later, she gave birth to a posthumous son, Liberale Francesco, who lived for only three days.

Widowed at sixteen, Gaetana went through years of trials marked by misunderstandings and slander from her late husband's family. In 1846, she was driven from her home and separated from Liberale Conte's children. She then returned to her mother's house. It was in prayer that she discerned her deep vocation: she understood that God wanted to be the "only spouse of her soul."

On February 1, 1847, she entered as a postulant with the Canossian Sisters (Daughters of Charity) of Bassano. She spent five happy months there, but a spiritual intuition prepared her for a return to her family. Indeed, her mother died on February 17, 1849, and Gaetana had to leave the convent to take care of her young minor brothers and sisters. For five years, she assumed this family burden amidst great financial difficulties and illnesses, while leading a life of intense prayer.

    Life and Work

Gaetana Sterni's commitment to the Pio Ricovero of Bassano del Grappa and the foundation of the congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Will.

In 1853, once her brothers and sisters were raised, Gaetana was free to realize her vocation. Guided by her confessor, Father Bedin, a Jesuit, who confirmed to her: "The Lord wants you at the Ricovero," she entered the "Pio Ricovero" (beggars' hospice) of Bassano del Grappa. This establishment then housed 115 poor, sick, and marginalized people in miserable and disorderly conditions. Gaetana committed herself there entirely "only to do the will of God." She would spend 36 years there, until her death, devoting herself tirelessly to the excluded and eventually becoming its director.

Her dedication attracted other companions eager to share her life of service and prayer. In 1865, she began to form a small community. On the evening of August 20, 1865, Gaetana and her first two companions pronounced private vows, marking the birth of the congregation of the Daughters of the Divine Will (which would later take the name Sisters of the Divine Will).

The charism of the institute is based on the fulfillment of the will of God through humble and total service to the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, notably through assistance at home and in hospices. On May 18, 1875, Bishop Giovanni Antonio Farina, Bishop of Vicenza, approved the first rules of the community.
