    Biography

The youth of Emilie Engel, marked by family trials and religious anxieties, until her liberating encounter with Father Joseph Kentenich.

Emilie Engel was born on February 6, 1893, in Husten, a small village in the municipality of Drolshagen, in the Sauerland region of Germany. She was the fourth of twelve children in a deeply Catholic farming family. Her childhood took place in a warm and pious family setting, but she was marked very early on by family trials, notably the death of her little brother Albert in 1904 at the age of five months, and then that of her brother Josef, who fell in combat in 1917 during the First World War. From a very young age, Emilie suffered from extreme sensitivity and exacerbated religious scrupulosity, nourished by an image of God then commonly presented as that of a severe and punishing judge. This constant fear of sinning or of not perfectly fulfilling the divine will generated deep anxieties and obsessions in her that stifled her natural joy of living. Despite the wish of her parents who wanted her to stay and work on the family farm, Emilie chose in 1908 to follow the path of teaching, like her older sisters. She studied in Arnsberg from 1909 to 1914 to obtain her teaching diploma. In 1915, she began teaching at the Catholic school in Herne-Sodingen, in the industrial region of the Ruhr. Nicknamed "the teacher Engel III" because two of her sisters were already teaching there, she was quickly confronted with the extreme social misery of miners' families, aggravated by the deprivations of the war. Emilie gave herself without counting for the most destitute: she watched over the dying, fed malnourished children, and sought work for the youth. It was through her charitable work that she came into contact with Schönstatt for the first time in 1918, when she brought a 14-year-old orphan there for a gardening apprenticeship, thus fulfilling a promise made to her dying mother. In August 1921, she participated in the first women's convention at Schönstatt, led by Father Joseph Kentenich, the founder of the movement. This meeting marked a decisive turning point in her life. Under the spiritual direction of Father Kentenich, Emilie began a path of inner healing. She gradually abandoned her vision of a judgmental God to discover the infinite love of a merciful Father, which progressively freed her from her anxieties and fears.

    Life and Work

Co-founder of the Secular Institute of the Sisters of Mary of Schoenstatt, Emilie Engel dedicated herself to the formation of novices before being tested by a serious illness.

On October 1, 1926, Emilie Engel definitively renounced her career as a schoolteacher to place herself entirely at the disposal of Father Joseph Kentenich for the foundation of a new community: the Secular Institute of the Sisters of Mary of Schoenstatt. She thus became one of the co-founders and first members of this institute. Endowed with a keen sense of organization and profound pedagogical skill, Emilie was appointed the first mistress of novices (director of formation) and joined the general leadership of the young community. In 1927, inhabited by an ardent desire for holiness for her institute, she offered her life to God, declaring herself ready to accept all possible sufferings so that the community of the Sisters of Mary might bear fruits of holiness for the Church. God seemed to accept this offering in a radical way. In 1935, Emilie contracted severe pulmonary tuberculosis, which ended her active service at the motherhouse. There followed a long period of illness spanning two decades, marked by prolonged stays in sanatoriums, strict isolation, and major surgical operations. These medical interventions, far from curing her, led to progressive paralysis that eventually confined her to a wheelchair and deprived her almost entirely of the use of speech. Yet, despite this extremely heavy handicap, her spiritual strength remained intact. In 1946, Father Kentenich appointed her provincial superior of the West German province, whose seat was established in 1949 in Koblenz-Metternich, within the "Haus Providentia." In the difficult context of the immediate post-war period, Emilie led her province with extraordinary peace, serenity, and wisdom, becoming a true pillar for her sisters. In 1954, during the institute's first general chapter, she was re-elected to the general leadership.

    Journey toward holiness

The heroic acceptance of illness and paralysis by Emilie Engel, testifying to a total abandonment to Divine Providence.

The path of holiness of Emilie Engel is intimately linked to her inner transformation and her heroic acceptance of suffering. Her life is the perfect reflection of the Schönstatt spirituality, centered on the Covenant of Love with the Virgin Mary (the Mother Thrice Admirable) and filial abandonment to Divine Providence. Her relationship with her spiritual director, Father Joseph Kentenich, is the channel through which she was able to overcome her psychological and spiritual traumas. When Father Kentenich was sent into exile in Milwaukee (United States) by the Holy Office in 1951, Emilie experienced this forced separation as a profound heartbreak. Despite the pain of no longer being able to consult her spiritual father directly and the ecclesial tensions surrounding the movement at that time, she demonstrated exemplary filial obedience and absolute fidelity to the Church. Her holiness does not reside in brilliant actions or extraordinary phenomena, but in the perfection of her daily abandonment. Confined to her wheelchair, unable to speak, she radiated an inner joy and peace that struck all who approached her. Her luminous gaze became the witness of her deep union with God. She passed away peacefully on November 20, 1955, at the Providentia house in Koblenz-Metternich, on the eve of the feast of the Presentation of Mary, surrounded by a solid reputation for holiness.

The opening of the cause for the beatification of Emilie Engel and the recognition of her heroic virtues by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.

The cause for the beatification of Emilie Engel was officially opened on October 12, 1999, in the Diocese of Trier, Germany. The diocesan inquiry gathered numerous testimonies and documents demonstrating the heroic nature of her virtues. The Positio was then transmitted to Rome, to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On May 10, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI promulgated the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, thus conferring upon her the title of Venerable. The cause was led for many years by Sister Thomasine Treese as postulator. In May 2025, Sister M. Elizabet Parodi, an Argentine theologian, was appointed as the new postulator for the cause at the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints in Rome. For the beatification of Emilie Engel to be pronounced, the official recognition of a miracle attributed to her intercession by the Holy See is required. To date, no miracle has yet been formally approved.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

The spirituality of absolute trust of Emilie Engel and the legacy of her message of peace in the face of anxiety.

The spirituality of the Venerable Emilie Engel is characterized by an absolute and unwavering trust in Divine Providence, summarized in her famous formula: "I want to become a miracle of trust" (in German: Ich will ein Wunder des Vertrauens werden). Faced with illness and trials, her constant response was: "My yes remains!" (Mein Ja bleibt!). She left behind a prayer that beautifully expresses her filial abandonment: "I know that you are my Father, I feel safe under your protection. I do not ask you where you are leading me, I follow you blindly..." Father Joseph Kentenich considered that Emilie had received from God a special mission for contemporary humanity, so often tormented by fear and insecurity. Having herself passed through the prisons of anxiety and scrupulosity, she became a guide to lead souls toward inner freedom and serene trust in the paternal love of God. Today, her tomb located in Koblenz-Metternich, in the park of the Providentia house, has become a place of pilgrimage and reflection. Many faithful, particularly young people and those afflicted by illness or anxiety, come to leave their prayer intentions there, testifying to the relevance and fruitfulness of her message of trust.
