    Biography

Youth in Ireland, emigration to the United States, and entry into the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Patrick Joseph Peyton was born on January 9, 1909, in Carracastle, Ireland, into a deeply Catholic farming family where the daily recitation of the Rosary was a central tradition. Interrupting his studies at age 15 to help on the farm, he emigrated in May 1928 to the United States with his brother Thomas to join their sisters in Scranton, Pennsylvania. After working as a sexton at St. Peter's Cathedral, he felt the call to the priesthood and, in August 1929, entered the Congregation of Holy Cross with his brother.
