    Biography

Birth and formation of Silvio Gallotti in Cannobio and Novara until his ordination in 1904.

Silvio Gallotti was born on September 22, 1881 (some sources mention September 21) in Cannobio, a locality situated on the shores of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Novara (today in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola), in Italy. Coming from a modest but deeply Christian family, he grew up in a climate of solid faith and fervent piety. From his childhood, he manifested a marked attraction for altar service and prayer.

At the age of eleven, supported by his parish priest, he entered the seminary of Novara. A brilliant student, he distinguished himself by his love of study, his ascetic rigor, and his Eucharistic devotion, while maintaining a joyful and affable temperament. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1904. He celebrated his first solemn mass on July 3, 1904, at the sanctuary of the Most Holy Piety (Santissima Pietà) of Cannobio.

    Life and Work

Father Silvio's pastoral ministry as curate, spiritual director in Arona, and at the major seminary of Novara.

After his ordination, Father Silvio began his pastoral ministry as a curate in small mountain parishes: first in Trarego, then in Cambiasca. In these isolated communities, he devoted himself unsparingly to the poor, the sick, and the young, facing solitude and indifference with constant joy and fervor. In August 1906, he was appointed curate (coadiutore) in the populous parish of Galliate, where he carried out intense pastoral activity until 1910. There, he distinguished himself by his zeal for families and young people, fostering numerous priestly and religious vocations.

In January 1911, the Bishop of Novara called him to Arona to become the spiritual director of the Saint Charles (San Carlo) minor seminary. He held this position for fifteen years, also assuming the duties of rector and bursar starting in 1921. Although administrative and financial tasks weighed upon him, he performed them with exemplary scrupulousness and fidelity. It was during these years in Arona that he discovered the Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin by Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort. This reading transformed his spiritual life and his educational method. He strove to form future priests in a demanding holiness, founded on a total consecration to Jesus through Mary.

During the summer months, he preached actively in various parishes and laid the foundations for a group of diocesan priests, the "Missionaries of Mary," deeply imbued with Montfortian spirituality. This group would later be incorporated into the diocesan congregation of the Oblates of Saints Gaudentius and Charles (Oblati dei Santi Gaudenzio e Carlo), which would take the additional title of "Missionaries of Mary."

In October 1926, he was appointed spiritual director of the theologians at the major seminary of Novara. However, his health, already fragile and undermined by severe privations and chronic stomach ailments, declined rapidly. After a painful agony experienced in a spirit of offering and as a victim, he died on May 2, 1927, at the hospital in Pallanza (now Verbania).

    Journey toward holiness

The reputation for holiness of Father Silvio and the opening of his beatification process.

The reputation for holiness of Father Silvio Gallotti, already alive during his lifetime, spread rapidly after his death. His remains, initially buried in the cemetery, were exhumed on September 3, 1947, and transferred to the crypt of the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Piety of Cannobio, where they still rest.

The diocesan informative process for his beatification was opened on February 11, 1953, and closed on December 22, 1959. The writings of the Servant of God were examined and approved by the Congregation of Rites on January 27, 1966. The cause was officially introduced in Rome on December 15, 1981. After the validation of the diocesan processes on February 17, 1995, and the publication of the Positio in 1997, the file was submitted for examination by theological consultants and cardinals.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

Silvio Gallotti's Marian and Christocentric spirituality, and his legacy among the Oblates of Saints Gaudentius and Charles.

The spirituality of Silvio Gallotti is deeply Christocentric and Marian, summarized by his motto: "The Virgin Mary is my all" (La Madonna è il mio tutto). Inspired by Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, he conceived Marian devotion not as a simple superficial piety, but as a path of perfect configuration to Christ. He offered himself to God as a "victim" for the sanctification of the clergy, convinced that the effectiveness of the priestly ministry depended on the personal holiness of the priest. He notably wrote: "The priest must resemble the candle, which burns and consumes itself to give light."

His spiritual legacy remains alive through the Congregation of the Oblates of Saints Gaudentius and Charles, Missionaries of Mary, who continue to serve the sanctuary of the Madonna of the Blood in Re (Valle Vigezzo), a place dear to Don Silvio where he loved to go on pilgrimage. The large square in front of the basilica of Re now bears his name. In Cannobio, his hometown, the parish oratory is also dedicated to his memory.
