    Biography

The youth of Georges Bellanger, his unexplained healing, and his priestly ordination.

Georges Bellanger was born on May 24, 1861, in Bourbourg-Campagne, in the Nord department. Coming from a family of farmers, he lost his father, Jules Joseph Bellanger, during his childhood. His mother, Félicie Catherine, raised their six children alone. In 1870, the family moved to Moulle. Georges studied at the Collège Saint-Bertin in Saint-Omer. At the age of fifteen, in 1876, he was afflicted with a severe coxalgia deemed incurable. His mother entrusted him to the Virgin Mary, and he was healed in an unexplained manner on May 31, 1876, retaining a slight limp. He entered the major seminary of Arras in October 1879, received the subdiaconate on July 15, 1883, and then the diaconate at Christmas of the same year. He taught at the minor seminary of Arras before being ordained a priest on July 12, 1885, at the Cathedral of Arras.

After his ordination, Father Georges Bellanger taught at the minor seminary of Arras (1884-1887) and directed the Saints-Anges school (1887-1890). In 1886, he discovered his vocation among the soldiers of the Arras garrison. Having become a military chaplain, he transformed the Military Work of Arras, attracting many soldiers there through his hospitality, prayer, and the sacraments. Drawn to religious life, he entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Brothers of Saint Vincent de Paul in 1896 and pronounced his first vows on July 2, 1898, at La Salette du Haut-Vaugirard. He continued his apostolate among the military and became master of novices in 1900. At the end of 1901, due to anti-clerical laws, he went into exile with his novices to Tournai, in Belgium.
