Biography
Birth in Venezuela, youth in Spain, law studies, and entry into the Society of Jesus.
The Venerable Tomás Morales Pérez, a Spanish Jesuit priest, was born on October 30, 1908, in Macuto, Venezuela. His parents, originally from the island of La Palma (Canary Islands), had settled there for professional reasons. In 1909, when he was only one year old, his family returned to Spain and settled in Madrid. He completed his secondary education at the Jesuit college of Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo in Chamartín (Madrid). He then pursued law studies at the University of Madrid, where he obtained his degree with honors (Premio Extraordinario) in 1930. During his university years, he was actively involved in Catholic student movements (Estudiantes Católicos), presiding over the Madrid federation. He was also marked by the influence of the Catholic Association of Propagandists and its founder, Ángel Herrera Oria. In 1931, he left for Italy to pursue his doctorate in law at the University of Bologna. It was there that he felt the call to total consecration. In 1932, he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. As the Jesuits had been expelled from Spain by the Second Republic, his novitiate took place in Chevetogne, Belgium. He returned to Spain in 1939 and was ordained a priest on May 13, 1942, in Granada.
Life and Work
Priestly ministry dedicated to the animation of the laity and the foundation of various movements and secular institutes.
Father Tomás Morales Pérez dedicated his priestly ministry to the animation and formation of the laity, prophetically anticipating the orientations of the Second Vatican Council. Beginning in 1946, upon his return to Madrid, he began preaching retreats of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius, addressing himself particularly to workers and employees. From this apostolate was born the Hogar del Empleado (Employee's Home), an apostolic and social movement of great vitality that sparked numerous works of assistance and solidarity. To structure and perpetuate this spiritual momentum, he founded several institutes and movements: the male secular institute Cruzados de Santa María (Crusaders of Saint Mary), the female secular institute Cruzadas de Santa María (Crusaders of Saint Mary), the youth movement Milicia de Santa María (Militia of Saint Mary), and the family association Hogares de Santa María (Homes of Saint Mary). These foundations aim to form committed laypeople, capable of being leaven for the Gospel at the heart of society and their professional environment. Father Morales dedicated thousands of hours to spiritual direction and preached more than 500 sessions of Spiritual Exercises throughout his life.
