Biography
Youth, education, and ordination of Antônio José Ferreira Viçoso in Portugal.
Antônio José Ferreira Viçoso was born on May 13, 1787, in Peniche, Portugal, into a deeply Christian family. From his childhood, he showed an inclination for religious life. At the age of nine, his parents entrusted his education to the Carmelite fathers in Olhalvo, and later to Santarém for his initial studies. At fifteen, he entered the diocesan seminary of Santarém, where he studied until 1809. After a brief return to his family, he decided to join the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists) and entered the internal seminary of Rilhafoles in Lisbon on July 11, 1811. He pronounced his vows there and was ordained a priest on March 7, 1818. After his ordination, he briefly taught philosophy at the seminary of Évora.
Life and Work
Mission in Brazil, foundation of the Caraça College, and reforming episcopate in Mariana.
In 1819, responding to a request from King Dom João VI who wished to send missionaries to Brazil, Father Viçoso was sent to that country with his confrere, Father Leandro Rebelo Peixoto e Castro. Upon arriving in Brazil, they settled in the Minas Gerais region. There, they founded the first Brazilian province of the Congregation of the Mission. Together, they took over the old hermitage of the Serra do Caraça and founded the famous Caraça College (Colégio do Caraça) in 1820, which would become a major center of education in Brazil. Father Viçoso also dedicated himself to teaching and spiritual direction, notably as rector of the seminary of Jacuecanga (in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro) for fifteen years, and then in Campo Belo. In 1837, he returned to Caraça and was elected Superior of the Congregation of the Mission in Brazil. In 1843, he was appointed Bishop of Mariana by Emperor Dom Pedro II, a nomination confirmed by Pope Gregory XVI in January 1844. He was consecrated bishop on May 5, 1844, at the Monastery of Saint Benedict in Rio de Janeiro and took possession of his diocese in June of the same year. During his long 31-year episcopate, Msgr. Viçoso strove to deeply reform the clergy of his immense diocese. He rigorously applied the decrees of the Council of Trent for the formation of priests, reorganized the seminary of Mariana, and carried out numerous pastoral visits. He also distinguished himself by his courageous defense of the freedom of the Church against the interference of imperial power. He firmly opposed slavery, publishing as early as 1840 a pamphlet titled Escravatura ofendida e defendida ("Slavery offended and defended") and striving to soften the lot of slaves. He also ordained the Blessed Francisco de Paula Victor, a former slave, as a priest, despite the prejudices of the time.
Path to holiness
A life of charity and simplicity leading to his holy death in 1875.
Bishop Viçoso led a life of great simplicity and tireless charity toward the poor, orphans, and the sick. During his lifetime, he was considered a "living saint" by the population of Minas Gerais. Despite his advanced age and declining health, exacerbated by a medical trip to Rio de Janeiro in 1869 which prevented him from participating in the First Vatican Council, he continued to exercise his episcopal duties until the very end. He celebrated his last Mass on June 16, 1875, the feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He then retired to his property of the Cartuxa (the Charterhouse), near Mariana, where he died holily on July 7, 1875, at the age of 88. His mortal remains rest in the crypt of the Cathedral Basilica of Mariana.
Beatification and canonization
The canonization process of Bishop Viçoso, who was declared venerable in 2014.
The reputation of holiness of Bishop Viçoso has never faded. As early as 1916, his godson and first biographer, Archbishop Silvério Gomes Pimenta (then Archbishop of Mariana), opened the diocesan informative process for his canonization. After several interruptions, the process was relaunched in 1964 by Archbishop Oscar de Oliveira. In 1986, he officially received the title of Servant of God. The file on his heroic virtues (Positio) was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome. On July 8, 2014, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, thus conferring upon him the title of Venerable. A miracle attributed to his intercession was presented in Rome in 2010 and is currently under examination for his beatification.
Spirituality and legacy
The Vincentian legacy and popular devotion to the Apostle of Minas.
The spirituality of Bishop Viçoso is deeply marked by the Vincentian charism: love for the poor, humility, missionary zeal, and concern for the formation of the clergy. His episcopal motto was Fides, spes et caritas (Faith, hope, and charity). He also held a filial devotion to the Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom he consecrated his diocese in December 1874. His legacy endures through the institutions he founded or reformed, notably the Caraça College and the seminary of Mariana, as well as in the collective memory of the people of Minas Gerais who continue to venerate him under the name of the "Apostle of Minas."
