    Biography

Origins, childhood, and vocation of the first Malagasy Brother of the Christian Schools.

Blessed Raphaël-Louis Rafiringa (born Firinga) was born in Antananarivo, in the Mahamasina district, in 1856 (on May 1st or November 3rd, depending on the sources). The only son of Rainiantoandro, a high-ranking officer of the Hova caste, he was given the name Firinga to ward off a bad omen. In 1866, he met the first French Lasallian missionaries and joined their school. Baptized on October 24th or November 7th, 1869, by the Jesuit Father Limozin under the name Raphaël, he added the prefix "Ra" to his name. Having become a substitute teacher in 1873, he entered the Lasallians in 1876. He took the habit on March 1st, 1878, under the name Brother Raphaël-Louis and pronounced his first vows on November 21st, 1879, becoming the first Malagasy Brother of the Christian Schools.

After the return of the missionaries in 1886, he took his perpetual vows in 1889. A writer, poet, and educator, he authored school textbooks, a grammar, a dictionary, and a Malagasy syntax. He was appointed a member of the Malagasy Academy in 1902 and received the gold medal of civil merit in 1903. Unjustly arrested in 1915 for alleged complicity with the secret society Vy Vato Sakelika, he was acquitted in 1916, but his health declined. He died on May 19, 1919, in Fianarantsoa.
