Biography
Born in 1836 in Tortosa, Manuel Domingo y Sol was ordained a priest in 1860. He dedicated his first years of ministry to youth and religious communities.
Born on April 1, 1836, in Tortosa, in the province of Tarragona in Spain, Manuel Domingo y Sol was the penultimate of the twelve children of Francisco Domingo Ferré and Josefa Sol Cid. Raised in a deeply Christian family, he felt the call to the priesthood very early and entered the diocesan seminary of his hometown in 1851, at the age of 15.
He was ordained a priest on June 2, 1860, in Tortosa and celebrated his first mass on June 9 of the same year at the Church of Saint Blaise (San Blas). Anxious to perfect his intellectual formation, he continued his studies at the University of Valencia, where he obtained a licentiate in theology in 1863, then a doctorate in the same discipline in 1867.
His first years of ministry were characterized by a remarkable and diversified pastoral zeal. He was first appointed vicar in La Aldea on March 7, 1862, then took charge of the parish of Santiago de Tortosa in 1863. At the same time, he served as a diocesan missionary, confessor to religious communities (contributing to the construction of three cloistered convents in Vinaroz, Vall de Uxó, and Benicarló), and teacher of religion and morality at the Institute of Tortosa starting in 1864. Very close to the youth, he founded leisure centers, a theater, a gym, and in 1869 created the magazine El Congregante, the first Catholic publication for young people in Spain.
Life and Work
Deeply moved by the poverty of seminarians, he founded the Brotherhood of Diocesan Worker Priests of the Heart of Jesus and established training colleges, including the Spanish College in Rome.
In February 1873, a chance encounter under the Arco del Romeu in Tortosa changed the direction of his ministry. Manuel Domingo y Sol crossed paths with the seminarian Ramón Valero. The latter, extremely poor, lived on alms in an attic with other students, as the Tortosa seminary had been destroyed during the Revolution of 1868. Deeply moved by the material and spiritual precariousness of these future priests, Manuel Domingo y Sol decided to devote all his strength to the formation of the clergy.
In September 1873, he opened the "Casa de San José" (House of Saint Joseph) in Tortosa, welcoming 24 destitute seminarians. The work developed rapidly: in 1876, he acquired a larger house to accommodate 98 students, and on April 11, 1879, he inaugurated the new "Colegio de San José para Vocaciones Eclesiásticas" (Saint Joseph College for Ecclesiastical Vocations), which welcomed more than 300 seminarians.
To perpetuate and structure this formation work, Manuel Domingo y Sol founded, on January 29, 1883, the Hermandad de Sacerdotes Operarios Diocesanos del Corazón de Jesús (Brotherhood of Diocesan Worker Priests of the Heart of Jesus). This association of secular priests, bound only by the vow of charity and obedience without strict religious vows, received the diocesan approval of the Bishop of Tortosa on January 1, 1886. Its main goal is to promote priestly vocations and to direct seminaries by establishing a family atmosphere, a rigorous selection of candidates, and a deep Eucharistic piety.
Under the founder's impetus, the Brotherhood quickly spread throughout Spain (notably in Valencia in 1884 and Murcia in 1888), Portugal, and Mexico (in Puebla de los Ángeles in 1902). One of the projects dearest to Manuel Domingo y Sol was the creation of a higher education center in Rome for Spanish seminarians. With the support of Pope Leo XIII, he founded the Pontifical Spanish College of Saint Joseph in Rome in 1892. By the apostolic letter Non mediocri cura of October 25, 1893, the Sovereign Pontiff officially entrusted the direction of this college to the Brotherhood of Diocesan Worker Priests.
Alongside his educational work, Manuel Domingo y Sol promoted the construction of temples of expiation and Eucharistic reparation, convinced that reparation to the Blessed Sacrament is the heart of priestly life. He thus had the Templo de la Reparación erected in Tortosa in 1903 and acquired the Templo de San Felipe de Jesús in Mexico City in 1889.
At his death, which occurred on January 25, 1909, in Tortosa, the Brotherhood counted 75 worker priests directing 10 vocation colleges, 17 diocesan seminaries, and 2 temples of reparation.
Path to Holiness
After his death in 1909, his reputation for holiness grew. His cause for beatification was introduced under Pius XII, and he was declared Venerable by Paul VI in 1970.
After the death of Manuel Domingo y Sol, the reputation for holiness of the man affectionately nicknamed "Mosén Sol" continued to grow. In 1920, the Fraternity began to systematically collect and classify his numerous writings. In April 1926, his mortal remains were transferred from the municipal cemetery to the mausoleum built within the Templo de la Reparación in Tortosa.
The ordinary informative process for his canonization was conducted in the diocese of Tortosa from 1930 to 1934. On January 28, 1941, a decree from the Sacred Congregation of Rites approved his writings, confirming that they contained nothing contrary to faith or morals.
The cause for beatification was officially introduced in Rome under the pontificate of Pius XII, who declared him a Servant of God on July 12, 1946. After the heroic examination of his theological and cardinal virtues, Pope Paul VI solemnly declared him Venerable on May 4, 1970. On this occasion, the Sovereign Pontiff bestowed upon him the title of "holy apostle of priestly vocations."
Beatification and canonization
Beatified by John Paul II on March 29, 1987, following the miraculous healing of Rafael de la Rosa Vega in Venezuela.
To allow for his beatification, the Church examined and recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession. This concerns the scientifically inexplicable healing of Rafael de la Rosa Vega, a 64-year-old man residing in Caracas (Venezuela). In August 1972, he was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer (pulmonary neoplasia) at an extremely serious stage. On October 2, 1972, his family began a novena of prayer invoking the intercession of the Venerable Manuel Domingo y Sol. The very next day, October 3, 1972, the patient felt a sudden and spectacular improvement, leading to a total, definitive, and scientifically inexplicable recovery, validated by the medical and theological commissions of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
The decree recognizing this miracle was signed by Pope John Paul II on November 10, 1986.
Manuel Domingo y Sol was solemnly beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 29, 1987, in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. In the pontifical brief of beatification, the Pope set his liturgical feast day for January 25, the anniversary of his death. However, the Brotherhood of Diocesan Worker Priests and several Spanish dioceses celebrate his memory on January 29, the anniversary date of the founding inspiration of the Brotherhood in 1883.
Spirituality and legacy
The spirituality of Emmanuel Domingo y Sol is based on the love of the priesthood and Eucharistic reparation. His work continues today throughout the world.
The spirituality of Manuel Domingo y Sol rests on two inseparable pillars: a passionate love for the priesthood and Eucharistic reparation. For him, the priest must be configured to the Heart of Jesus and find in the Eucharist the source and summit of his ministry. He summarized his vision of clerical formation with this famous formula: "The formation of the clergy is what one could call the key to the harvest in all fields of the glory of God" ("La formación del Clero es lo que podríamos decir la llave de la cosecha en todos los campos de la gloria de Dios").
The legacy of "Mosén Sol" remains particularly alive through the Brotherhood of Diocesan Worker Priests, which continues its pastoral and vocational work today in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Pontifical Spanish College in Rome, which he founded, continues to train the future leaders of the Spanish Church and has seen thousands of priests and more than 70 bishops pass through its walls.
The spiritual fruitfulness of his work was also manifested by the supreme testimony of his sons: during the Spanish Civil War, several diocesan worker priests suffered martyrdom because of their faith and their fidelity to their mission as educators. Among them, Pedro Ruiz de los Paños and eight of his companions were beatified in 1995, followed by four other martyrs of the Brotherhood beatified in 2021.
