Blessed John of Vercelli (Giovanni da Vercelli), from the Garbella family, was born around 1205 in Mosso Santa Maria, in the province of Biella, Italy. After studies at the University of Paris, where he obtained his doctorate in Roman and canon law, he taught in Paris and then in Vercelli. Around 1229, won over by the preaching of Jordan of Saxony, he entered the Order of Preachers. He trained in Bologna and quickly assumed important roles: prior in Vercelli (1245), vicar general in Hungary (1254), prior in Bologna, provincial of Lombardy (1257-1264), and inquisitor in Lombardy and Venetia starting in 1251.

Diplomatic missions for peace, propagation of the devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, and death in Montpellier.

An esteemed diplomat, John of Vercelli carried out several peace missions for the popes. In 1274, he participated in the Second Council of Lyon and led a mediation between the kings of France and Castile. After the council, Pope Gregory X entrusted John of Vercelli and the Dominican Order with the mission of propagating the devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus to counter the Albigensian heresy. He dedicated himself actively to this by erecting altars and confraternities. Despite his advanced age, he continued his travels and died at the convent of Montpellier on November 30, 1283.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

A model of poverty, foundation of the Confraternity of the Holy Name of Jesus, and promotion of Thomism.

John of Vercelli embodies the figure of a superior who is at once firm, austere, and deeply paternal. His spirituality rests on an absolute trust in Divine Providence, a strict evangelical poverty, and an ardent love for the Name of Jesus. His most enduring legacy remains the foundation and promotion of the Confraternity of the Holy Name of Jesus (Holy Name Society), which has spread throughout the world. Furthermore, his decisive role in the preservation and promotion of the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas greatly contributed to making Thomism the intellectual foundation of the Order of Preachers and the Catholic Church.
