    Biography

    The youth of Aurelia Stefani in Italy and her entry into the Missionary Sisters of the Consolata.

    Aurelia Jacoba Mercede Stefani was born on August 22, 1891, in Anfo, Italy. The fifth of twelve children, she courageously took over the management of the household upon her mother's death in 1907. In June 1911, she joined the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Consolata in Turin. She received the religious habit on January 12, 1912, under the name Sister Irene and pronounced her first vows on January 29, 1914.

    Her service as a nurse during the First World War and her apostolate among the Kikuyu people in Kenya.

    Arriving in Kenya in January 1915, Sister Irene served as a Red Cross nurse during the First World War, caring for the wounded in Kenya and Tanzania. In 1920, she was sent to the Gikondi mission. Her tireless dedication to the sick and her teaching earned her the nickname 'Nyaatha' (Mother of Mercy) from the Kikuyu people. She died of bubonic plague on October 31, 1930, after caring for a patient afflicted by the scourge.

    Path to Holiness

    The memory of Sister Irene Stefani remains extremely vivid in Kenya and Italy. Her reputation for holiness led to the opening of her beatification process in 1984, conducted jointly in the Archdiocese of Nyeri and in Turin. On April 2, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, thus conferring upon her the title of Venerable.

    The miracle of the multiplication of water in Mozambique and her historic beatification in Kenya in 2015.

    Her beatification was made possible by a miracle that occurred from January 10 to 13, 1989, in Nipepe (Mozambique), where the water in the baptismal font multiplied to save 270 war refugees from dehydration. Pope Francis approved this miracle in 2014. She was beatified on May 23, 2015, in Nyeri by Cardinal Polycarp Pengo, marking the very first beatification celebrated on Kenyan soil.

    Her motto of absolute charity and the continuous devotion to her relics in Nyeri.

    Guided by her motto 'I will love charity more than myself', Sister Irene lived an intimate union with Christ through the service of the poor and the sick. Her relics have rested at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Consolata in Nyeri since October 24, 2015. She is today venerated as the patroness of works of mercy.
