    Biography

Birth in Spello, medical studies in Perugia, marriage to Lia Sabatini, and the trial of illness.

Vittorio Trancanelli was born on April 26, 1944, in Spello, in the province of Perugia, Italy, where his family had taken refuge due to the bombings of the Second World War. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Petrignano d'Assisi, his father Saverio's hometown. After brilliant secondary studies at the "Properzio" classical lyceum in Assisi, he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Perugia, from which he graduated with honors. Alongside his studies, he matured his Christian faith within Catholic Action and under the spiritual guidance of local priests. On October 18, 1970, he married Rosalia (known as Lia) Sabatini. The couple settled in Perugia, where Vittorio began his career as a surgeon at the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital (also known as the Silvestrini Hospital). In 1976, one month before the birth of their only biological son, Diego, Vittorio was struck by a severe ulcerative colitis complicated by diffuse peritonitis. Saved from almost certain death, he had to live the rest of his life with an ileostomy, an infirmity he kept secret from almost everyone around him, with the exception of his wife and his closest medical colleagues. He described this ordeal as a "thorn in the flesh," which he bore with immense fortitude and in union with the suffering Christ.

    Mission 02 / 05

    Life and Work

Devoted surgical activity, welcoming seven adopted or foster children, and founding the association "Alle Querce di Mamre."

Despite chronic illness and daily physical suffering, Vittorio Trancanelli continued his surgical activity with exceptional devotion. Nicknamed "the saint of the operating room," he refused any extra fees and considered his profession a ministry of compassion inspired by the Gospel, seeing Christ himself in every patient. His charity was not limited to the hospital. With his wife Lia, they decided to put the Gospel into practice by opening their home to others. Unable to have more biological children, they welcomed seven children in succession through adoption or foster care, several of whom had severe physical or mental disabilities. In 1992, they notably welcomed Alessandra, a young girl with Down syndrome who had become an orphan. To structure and expand this work of hospitality, Vittorio, his wife, and several friend families founded the association "Alle Querce di Mamre" (At the Oaks of Mamre), based in Cenerente (Perugia). Recognized by the Church on June 4, 1995 (the Solemnity of Pentecost) and officially established on October 9, 1997, this association collaborates closely with the diocesan Caritas to offer a home and support to single mothers, women, and children in situations of great distress, without distinction of nationality or religion.

    Theology 03 / 05

    Journey toward holiness

Faith lived in daily life, study of Hebrew and Judaism, and final moments of life in 1998.

The life of Vittorio Trancanelli is a testimony of holiness lived in the daily life of a layman, a husband, a father, and a doctor. His faith was nourished by intense prayer and a deep passion for the study of the Holy Scriptures. Starting in 1980, he dedicated himself to learning Hebrew and studying Judaism in order to better understand the cultural and historical roots of Jesus, actively engaging in Judeo-Christian dialogue. In the spring of 1998, his health deteriorated severely once again. Sensing his end approaching, he asked to be surrounded by all his children in his hospital room. He passed away on June 24, 1998, in Cenerente, at the age of 54. Shortly before dying, he confided to his wife: "This is what it was worth living for, not to become someone, to have a career, or to make money."

    Beatification and canonization

Opening of the cause in 2006, decree of heroic virtues in 2017 by Pope Francis, and transfer of his remains.

The reputation of holiness of Vittorio Trancanelli spread rapidly after his death, particularly among the sick, his former colleagues, and the families of Perugia. The Archbishop Emeritus of Perugia, Msgr. Giuseppe Chiaretti, described him as a "lay saint of our time." The cause for beatification and canonization was officially opened in the Diocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve on September 24, 2006. The diocesan inquiry, which gathered numerous testimonies and documents, concluded on June 23, 2013. The legal validity of this inquiry was recognized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on November 8, 2013. On February 27, 2017, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, thereby conferring upon him the title of Venerable. On July 2, 2017, his mortal remains were transferred from the parish church of Cenerente to the chapel of the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Perugia, allowing the sick and medical staff to come and pray near him. The cause is currently ongoing, awaiting the official recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

Medicine lived as a lay liturgy and the endurance of the "Alle Querce di Mamre" association.

The spirituality of Vittorio Trancanelli rests on a discreet but radical charity, deeply rooted in the Gospel. He conceived of medicine not as a simple profession, but as a "lay liturgy" and an extension of the compassion of Christ. His post-operative attitude, consisting of remaining for long hours at the bedside of his patients to watch over them, testified to his absolute respect for human dignity. The legacy of his work endures through the "Alle Querce di Mamre" association, which continues to welcome marginalized people and those in difficulty in Perugia. Furthermore, his figure inspires many health professionals who see in him a model of reconciliation between scientific rigor, professional competence, and faith lived without compromise.
