Vincenzo Lipani was born on December 28, 1842, in Caltanissetta, Sicily. The fifth child of Salvatore Lipani and Calogera Raitano, he was baptized the same day. After studies with the Jesuits, he overcame his parents' opposition to enter the Capuchin novitiate in Caccamo at the age of 18, taking the name "Fra Angelico." Ordained a priest on December 3, 1865, he was forced to leave his convent the following year due to the laws suppressing religious orders in the Kingdom of Italy, and returned to Caltanissetta as a secular priest.
