    Biography

Birth in Russia, family exile, return to Warsaw, and priestly ordination in the Byzantine-Slavic rite.

Paweł Klamans Smolikowski (baptized with the names Paweł Klemens) was born on February 4, 1849, in Tver, Russia. He came from a deeply Catholic and patriotic Polish intelligentsia family. His father, Seweryn Karol Smolikowski, an engineer and mathematician, had been exiled to Russia after participating in the Polish November Uprising of 1830. His mother, Melania Komajewska, also belonged to the Polish nobility. In 1859, the family was permitted to return to Warsaw, where young Paweł completed his secondary education. Feeling an irresistible call to the priesthood, he entered the diocesan seminary of Warsaw in 1866. A year later, in 1867, he traveled to Rome, where he discovered the Congregation of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ (the Resurrectionists). Drawn by their paschal spirituality, he entered their novitiate. He pronounced his perpetual vows on March 5, 1873. On April 15 of the same year, after obtaining his doctorate in philosophy and theology, he was ordained a priest in the Byzantine-Slavic (Eastern) rite in order to dedicate himself to the apostolate among Eastern Christians. He was thus the first Resurrectionist priest ordained in this rite.

    Mission 02 / 05

    Life and Work

Pastoral ministry in Bulgaria, college direction in Lviv, rectorship in Rome, and General Superiorate of his congregation.

Father Smolikowski dedicated the essential part of his life to education, missions, and the governance of his congregation. Mission in Bulgaria (1874-1882): He began his pastoral ministry in Adrianople (today Edirne, in Turkey), where he worked for eight years as a missionary and educator among Catholics of the Eastern rite (the Uniates). There, he revealed remarkable pedagogical qualities. Activity in Lviv (1882-1891): He was then sent to Lviv (today in Ukraine), where he worked as an educator and college director alongside Father Walerian Kalinka. Together, they developed the Resurrectionist educational system, based on mutual trust, responsibility, and the unconditional love of God. He notably introduced an innovative system of student self-governance there. Rectorship in Rome and General Superiorate: In 1891, he was appointed rector of the Polish College in Rome, a key institution for the formation of the Polish clergy while Poland was deprived of its national sovereignty. He held this position for more than twenty years (with interruptions). From 1895 to 1905, he was elected Superior General of the Congregation of the Resurrection. During his mandate, he focused on raising the spiritual and intellectual level of his confreres. He was also appointed a consultor to several dicasteries of the Holy See, notably the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and the Congregation of the Council. Final years in Krakow (1921-1926): He spent the last years of his life in Krakow, where he served as master of novices. A prolific writer, he left behind 237 works and articles written in several languages, dealing with history, philosophy, apologetics, and ascetic theology.

    Path to holiness

Died in the odor of sanctity in Krakow, solemn funeral and transfer of his mortal remains.

Father Paweł Smolikowski died in the odor of sanctity on September 11, 1926, in Krakow, at the house of his congregation located on Łobzowska Street. His funeral attracted a huge crowd. It was presided over by his former students and friends, the Archbishop of Krakow, Mgr Adam Stefan Sapieha, and the Armenian Archbishop of Lviv, Mgr Józef Teodorowicz. Mgr Sapieha wrote about him: "I have lost a great deal, for he was a true friend... a true model of a priest and a religious... I think we can boldly pray to him." Initially buried in the congregation's tomb at the Rakowicki Cemetery in Krakow, his body was transferred in 1967 to the nave of the Church of the Resurrection (ul. Łobzowska 10) in Krakow, due to the opening of his cause for beatification.

    Legacy 04 / 05

    Beatification and canonization

Opening of the cause by Karol Wojtyła and recognition of the heroic nature of his virtues by Pope Francis in 2017.

The cause for beatification was officially opened on May 24, 1966, by the Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła (the future Pope John Paul II). The diocesan phase of the informative inquiry concluded on April 29, 1969. The acts were then transmitted to Rome, and the Congregation for the Causes of Saints validated their legal regularity by a decree on May 17, 1991. The Positio on the heroic nature of his virtues was submitted in 1994. Following the favorable opinion of the theological consultants in 2010, Pope Francis authorized, on December 18, 2017, the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his theological and cardinal virtues. From that moment, Paweł Klamans Smolikowski was declared Venerable.

    Spirituality and Heritage

Paschal spirituality, Marian devotion, and an innovative vision of Christian education.

The spirituality of the Venerable Paweł Smolikowski is deeply marked by the mystery of the Resurrection: dying to sin to be reborn to a new life in Jesus Christ. He nurtured a fervent devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. His legacy lies primarily in his vision of Christian education. For him, educating did not consist of constraining or erasing the child's personality, but of developing everything good within them, relying on their freedom and own will, enlightened by divine grace. He insisted on the importance of self-education and persevering prayer. Even today, his figure inspires Christian educators and members of the Congregation of the Resurrection.
