    Biography

Youth, studies, and ordination of Giorgio Guzzetta.

Giorgio Guzzetta (known in Albanian as Gjergji Guxeta) was born on April 23, 1682, in Piana dei Greci (today Piana degli Albanesi), in Sicily, into a family of modest farmers, Lorenzo Guzzetta and Caterina Mamola. This locality is one of the main colonies founded by Albanian refugees (the Arbëreshë) who fled the Ottoman invasion in the 15th and 16th centuries, jealously preserving their language, culture, and Byzantine liturgical rite.

From a very young age, Giorgio showed a sharp intelligence and remarkable aptitude for study. He was first entrusted to the Jesuits of Trapani, where he studied humanities. He then entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Monreale, upon which the Albanian colonies of Sicily then spiritually depended. There, he obtained a doctorate in sacred theology and distinguished himself as a Hellenist and antiquarian. His talents as a translator of classical Greek attracted the attention of the Archbishop of Monreale, Cardinal Francesco Del Giudice, who appointed him pro-secretary and official translator at his court.

Despite the prospects of a brilliant ecclesiastical career, Giorgio chose the path of humility and community life. On December 5, 1706, benefiting from a papal dispensation necessary due to his original belonging to the Byzantine rite, he entered the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Palermo (at the Olivella). He was ordained a priest on December 22, 1707, adopting the Latin rite for his ministry within the Oratory, while maintaining an unwavering love for the Eastern traditions of his people.

    Life and Work

The major foundations of Giorgio Guzzetta for the Italo-Albanian minority.

The work of Giorgio Guzzetta is intrinsically linked to the preservation of the religious, linguistic, and cultural identity of the Italo-Albanian minority in Sicily, which was then under strong pressure of Latinization from local ecclesiastical authorities. To address this, he founded several major institutions: 1. The Congregation of the Oratory of Piana (1716): Established in Piana dei Greci with the support of Cardinal Del Giudice, this community brought together celibate priests of the Greek-Byzantine rite. Although he was its founder and inspiration, Giorgio Guzzetta never became an official member, remaining canonically attached to the Oratory of Palermo due to his ordination in the Latin rite. 2. The Collegio di Maria (1731-1733): Founded in Piana with the collaboration of Father Antonio Brancato, this establishment was intended for the education and instruction of young girls of the Arbëreshë community. It was one of the first female boarding schools in the region, providing instruction in Italian and Albanian, and maintaining Byzantine liturgical traditions. 3. The Italo-Albanian Seminary of Palermo (1734): This is undoubtedly his most monumental work. Founded to train an educated clergy faithful to the Eastern tradition, this seminary became a leading intellectual and cultural hub for the Italo-Albanian communities. It helped safeguard the Byzantine liturgical heritage and constituted the first true center for Albanological studies in Europe, training generations of intellectuals and priests. Alongside these foundations, Giorgio Guzzetta was a pioneer of ecumenism. He worked tirelessly for the union of the Churches, fostering contacts with the Christian East and advocating for the creation of a Greek-rite bishopric in Sicily (which would finally be erected after his death). He is also linked to the history of Albanian philology: in 1740/1743, he received and studied transcriptions of the Meshari (the Missal) of Gjon Buzuku, the oldest known text written in the Albanian language (1555), thus contributing to its intellectual preservation.

    Journey toward holiness

The spiritual life, charity, and trials of Giorgio Guzzetta.

The life of Giorgio Guzzetta is marked by a constant search for the will of God, lived in evangelical poverty, obedience, and a deep love for the poor, orphans, and the excluded. Despite the spiritual trials and doubts that assailed him at the beginning of his ministry, he underwent a true "second conversion" that led him to abandon himself totally to Divine Providence. Seeking him out for his spiritual counsel and talents as a preacher, nobles and prelates gave him gifts which he systematically redistributed to the poor. At the end of his life, he was tried by a long and painful illness that left him completely blind. He passed away holily on November 21, 1756, at the Carmelite convent of Partinico, at the age of 74. His body was subsequently interred in the Oratorian church of Sant'Ignazio in Palermo.

    Beatification and canonization

The process for the recognition of the holiness of Giorgio Guzzetta.

The cause for the beatification of Giorgio Guzzetta was introduced in the 20th century, with the opening of an informative process on December 19, 1934. After a long period of stagnation, the cause was revived in 2015 under the impetus of the Eparch of Piana degli Albanesi, Bishop Giorgio Demetrio Gallaro. The eparchial inquiry into the reputation of holiness and virtues opened on July 8, 2016, and closed on November 25, 2017.

On November 25, 2021, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation (now Dicastery) for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree recognizing the heroic virtues of Giorgio Guzzetta, thereby conferring upon him the title of Venerable. For his beatification to be pronounced, the official recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession is required. To date, no miracle has yet been the subject of a decree of approval.

    Legacy 05 / 05

    Spirituality and legacy

The spiritual and cultural legacy of Giorgio Guzzetta for the Italo-Albanian Church.

The spirituality of Giorgio Guzzetta is rooted in the charism of Saint Philip Neri, characterized by joy, simplicity, pastoral charity, and a deep Eucharistic and Marian devotion. His constant meditation on the Passion of Christ nourished his apostolic zeal. His legacy is immense for the Italo-Albanian Church (the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi). By fighting for the recognition and dignity of the Byzantine rite within the Catholic Church, he enabled the survival of a unique Eastern tradition in Southern Italy. The Seminary he founded was the beating heart of the cultural and literary renaissance of the Arbëreshë. In tribute to his work, the eparchial library of Piana degli Albanesi, which preserves a precious heritage of more than 12,000 volumes, was officially named in his honor in 2019.
