Biography

Stephen (Stefano) Ferrando was born on September 28, 1895, in Rossiglione, Italy, into a deeply Christian family. He attended Salesian schools in Fossano and then at Valdocco in Turin, where he associated with the successors of Saint John Bosco. He entered the Salesian novitiate and made his first profession on September 13, 1912. His formation was interrupted by the First World War, during which he served in the military medical corps and received the Silver Medal of Military Valor. He made his perpetual vows in 1920 and was ordained a priest on March 18, 1923.

On December 2, 1923, Father Ferrando embarked for India. Upon arriving in Shillong, he trained the first generations of Indian Salesians. Appointed Bishop of Krishnagar in 1934, he was transferred to Shillong in 1935. His episcopate was marked by tireless pastoral zeal, the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, and the foundation, on October 24, 1942, of the congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC) for evangelization and education. He resigned in 1969 to make way for an indigenous bishop, leaving behind a diocese in full growth.

Returning to Italy in 1969, Bishop Ferrando retired to Genoa-Quarto in prayer and passed away on June 20, 1978. Initially buried in his native village, his remains were transferred to India in 1987 at the request of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians. His remains rest in Shillong. His cause for beatification and canonization was opened by the Diocese of Shillong, with a diocesan inquiry conducted from 2003 to 2006.
