Biography
Birth and youth of Claudina Russo in Barra, her early piety and spiritual discernment.
Claudina Russo, better known as Claudia Russo, was born on November 18, 1889, in Barra, now a district of Naples. The third of ten children of Ernesto Russo and Rosa Nicoletti, she received her name in honor of her paternal grandmother, Claudine Besson. From her childhood, she distinguished herself by her piety, making her first communion in 1898. At thirteen, she made a private vow of virginity. In 1911, she received confirmation. Guided by Father Michele Abete and later by Monsignor Gioacchino Brandi, she discerned her vocation toward an active social apostolate among the most destitute rather than the contemplative life.

Cardinal Alessio Ascalesi approved the institute at the diocesan level on March 12, 1933, the day Claudia pronounced her public vows and became Superior General. The institute subsequently expanded to San Giuseppe Vesuviano in 1935 and received the pontifical decree of praise in 1947.

After the validation of the inquiry in 1993 and the submission of the Positio in 1996, the theological consultants and then the cardinals gave a favorable opinion. On December 20, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues, thereby declaring her venerable.
