    Biography

Birth in Siena into a noble family, early family trials, and social commitment alongside her brother Pietro.

Bianca Piccolomini Clementini was born in Siena, Italy, on April 7, 1875, into an illustrious family of the Tuscan nobility that counted Pope Pius II among its ancestors. She was the daughter of Count Niccolò Piccolomini Clementini and Countess Angiola Piccolomini Carli. Her youth was quickly marked by the trial of bereavement: her little sister Emilia passed away at the age of two, and then her father died of tuberculosis in 1882, when Bianca was only seven years old. Following this loss, her mother moved with Bianca and her younger brother Pietro (born in 1880) to the Villa Santa Regina, in the Sienese countryside, where she provided them with a rigorous Christian education.

At the beginning of the 20th century, her brother Pietro became a major actor in social Catholicism in Siena, actively drawing inspiration from the directives of Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum. Bianca committed herself fully alongside him as his secretary and collaborator. Together, they opened the salons of their family palace to social and cultural conferences and worked to improve the living conditions of workers and peasants. However, on November 28, 1907, Pietro died suddenly of scarlet fever at the age of 27. This immense grief devastated Bianca, but it strengthened her faith and definitively oriented her life toward the service of the most destitute.

    Life and Work

Foundation of the Laboratorio cooperativo Advocata Senensium and the Company of Saint Angela Merici of Siena for education and social support.

In memory of her brother, Bianca and her mother founded a sewing and embroidery workshop in 1907-1908 for young working women in Siena, the Laboratorio cooperativo Advocata Senensium. Bianca took charge of it, ensuring not only their professional training but also their human and religious education. She also acquired a space for a Catholic youth circle to which her brother had verbally committed before his death.

Through her charitable commitments, Bianca felt the call to dedicate her life to God while remaining in the world, without the obligation of monastic enclosure. She discovered in the Rule of the Company of Saint Ursula, founded in the 16th century by Saint Angela Merici, the ideal formula for a secular consecration.

On November 25, 1917, in the presence of the Archbishop of Siena, Msgr. Prospero Scaccia, she founded the Compagnia di Sant'Angela Merici di Siena (Company of Saint Angela Merici of Siena) with two companions, Matilde Chiantini and Zenobia Boscagli. Bianca took the religious name Sister Margherita del Santissimo Sacramento (Margaret of the Blessed Sacrament) and assumed the role of superior. Her mother, initially reluctant toward this novel form of consecrated life, joined the Company a year later.

Under Bianca's leadership, the institute developed numerous social and educational works: - The Santa Regina Agricultural Colony (Colonia Agricola Santa Regina): Founded in December 1920 at the Villa Santa Regina, it welcomed and trained young girls from the countryside and single mothers. - Teaching and apprenticeship: She created an agricultural apprenticeship school (which would obtain official parity in 1938) and an agricultural technical school in 1944. She also assumed the management of several kindergartens and a primary school. - Spiritual life: She organized spiritual retreats and promoted nocturnal Eucharistic adoration, particularly in reparation for priests and consecrated persons.
