    Biography

Birth and youth of Benedetta Bianchi Porro, marked from childhood by illness.

Benedetta Bianchi Porro was born on August 8, 1936, in Dovadola, in the province of Forlì, Italy. She was the daughter of Guido Bianchi Porro, an engineer, and Elsa Giammarchi. From birth, she suffered a severe hemorrhage that prompted her mother to have her given an emergency baptism with water from Lourdes. At the age of three months, she contracted poliomyelitis, which left her with a right leg shorter than the left and forced her to wear a heavy orthopedic shoe. Despite these physical difficulties, Benedetta grew up as a joyful, intelligent, and sensitive child, who loved nature and reading. In 1951, her family moved to Sirmione, on Lake Garda. There, she continued her secondary studies in Desenzano.

    Life and Work

Benedetta's medical studies, self-diagnosis of her illness, and apostolate from her room.

In October 1953, at the age of 17, Benedetta enrolled at the University of Milan. She began by studying physics to please her father, but quickly redirected her studies toward medicine, driven by a deep desire to heal and help others. It was during her medical studies that her health severely deteriorated, notably through a progressive loss of hearing. In 1957, thanks to the knowledge she had acquired, she was the first to diagnose the terrible ailment consuming her: neurofibromatosis type I (or Recklinghausen's disease), a rare genetic condition that causes the development of tumors on the nervous system. This disease would gradually deprive her of all her senses. She underwent multiple painful surgical interventions on her head and spine, but none could stop the progression of the disease. She became completely deaf, then blind, and lost the use of her limbs. Despite the forced interruption of her medical studies, her room in Sirmione became a place of apostolate and comfort. She welcomed many friends, students, and visitors there, and maintained a vast correspondence. No longer able to communicate except through a tactile alphabet (by tracing signs in the palm of her right hand, the only limb of which she retained slight use), she transmitted to everyone a message of hope, peace, and total abandonment to the divine will.

    Journey toward holiness

Spiritual transformation during her pilgrimages to Lourdes and acceptance of her vocation of suffering.

Benedetta's spiritual journey was deeply marked by her pilgrimages to Lourdes in May 1962 and in 1963. While she initially went there to ask for physical healing, she experienced a profound inner transformation. Before the grotto, she met a young paralyzed woman and prayed intensely for her. It was at Lourdes that she understood that her true vocation was not to be healed, but to offer her sufferings in union with the Passion of Christ for the salvation of souls. She wrote to a friend: "I realized, more than ever, the richness of my state, and I desire nothing other than to keep it. This was for me the miracle of Lourdes." Benedetta passed away holily on January 23, 1964, in Sirmione, at the age of 27. Her last words, whispered in a breath, were: "Grazie" (Thank you). On March 22, 1969, her remains were transferred to the church of the Abbey of Sant'Andrea in Dovadola, her native village, where she now rests.

    Beatification and canonization

Recognition of heroic virtues, miracle of healing, and beatification in 2019.

The cause for the beatification of Benedetta Bianchi Porro was opened in the Diocese of Forlì-Bertinoro. On December 23, 1993, Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable, recognizing the heroic nature of her virtues. The miracle accepted for her beatification concerns the scientifically inexplicable healing of a young man in Genoa. The latter, having fallen into a deep coma following a serious motorcycle accident in August 1986 and declared brain dead, awoke suddenly after his mother and relatives recited a novena invoking the intercession of Benedetta. The diocesan inquiry into this healing took place in Genoa between 2013 and 2014. On January 25, 2018, the Medical Board of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints recognized the rapid, complete, lasting, and scientifically inexplicable nature of this healing. On November 7, 2018, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing this miracle. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on September 14, 2019, in the Cathedral of Forlì, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, representing the Sovereign Pontiff.
