Biography
Youth, studies, and family life of Giuseppe Tovini, born in Lombardy in 1841.
Giuseppe Antonio Tovini was born on March 14, 1841, in Cividate Camuno, in the province of Brescia, Lombardy (then under Austrian rule within the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia). He was the eldest of seven children born to Mosè Tovini and Rosa Malaguzzi. His family, though of modest means, instilled in him a solid and rigorous Christian faith.
He began his secondary education in Lovere from 1852 to 1858. Faced with his family's financial difficulties, he benefited from the help of his uncle, the priest Don Giambattista Malaguzzi, who enabled him to obtain a free place at the college for poor young boys founded by Don Nicola Mazza in Verona.
In 1859, when he was only 18 years old, his father passed away. Despite this trial, he continued his studies and obtained his law degree from the University of Pavia in August 1865. That same year, his mother also died, leaving him solely responsible for his five younger siblings. To provide for their needs, he worked in Lovere at a law firm and a notary's office, while also teaching as a professor and vice-rector at the municipal college.
In 1867, he moved to Brescia to join the law firm of Giordano Corbolani. On January 6, 1875, he married the latter's daughter, Emilia Corbolani, at the Church of Saint Agatha in Brescia. The couple would have ten children, including one son who became a Jesuit priest and two daughters who entered religious life. His nephew and godson, Mosè Tovini (1877-1930), whom he guided and supported, would also become a priest and was beatified in 2006.
Life and Work
Political engagement, creation of banking institutions, and defense of Christian education.
Giuseppe Tovini distinguished himself through an exceptional commitment to public, social, and economic life, guided by the desire to defend the freedom of the Church and Christian education in the unified Italy of the late 19th century, which was marked by a strong anticlerical current.
* Political and civic engagement: From 1871 to 1874, he served as mayor of his hometown, Cividate Camuno. During his term, he improved local finances, upgraded road infrastructure, and promoted the project for a railway line to open up the Valle Camonica. From 1879, he was elected as a municipal and provincial councilor in Brescia, where he became a defender of the working classes and the most destitute.
* The Tovinian credit system: Aware that Catholic works, particularly independent schools, could not survive without total financial autonomy from the State, he conceived a network of credit institutions. He was thus the promoter and founder of several major banks: the Banca di Valle Camonica in Breno, founded on June 2, 1872; the Banca San Paolo di Brescia, founded on March 20, 1888; and the Banco Ambrosiano in Milan, founded on August 27, 1896.
* Defense of education and the Christian press: For Tovini, education was the priority mission field ("Our Indies are our schools"). In 1882, he founded the Saint Joseph Kindergarten (Giardino d'infanzia S. Giuseppe) and the Venerabile A. Luzzago college. In 1890, he created the Work for the Preservation of the Faith in the Schools of Italy (Opera di Preservazione della Fede nelle scuole d'Italia) and, in 1891, the pedagogical journal Scuola Italiana Moderna (or Fede e Scuola). He also supported the Leo XIII Union (Unione Leone XIII) to assist Catholic university students. To give a voice to Catholics, he founded the daily newspaper Il Cittadino di Brescia on April 13, 1878. He was actively involved in the Opera dei Congressi (Catholic Action movement), for which he chaired the diocesan committee of Brescia and became national vice-president.
Path to Holiness
Spiritual life within the Third Order of Saint Francis, premature death, and the introduction of his cause.
Giuseppe Tovini's intense professional and social activity was rooted in a deep spiritual life. In 1882, he joined the Third Order of Saint Francis (Secular Franciscan Order), finding in the spirituality of Assisi the strength to live in detachment from riches (he died poor despite the banks he had founded) and in the service of the poor. A fervent adorer of the Eucharist and deeply devoted to the Virgin Mary, he nourished his daily commitments through constant prayer. Suffering from chronic lung conditions, he passed away prematurely on January 16, 1897, in Brescia, at the age of 55. His remains were transferred on September 10, 1922, to the church of San Luca in Brescia. His reputation for holiness led to the opening of his cause for beatification. The diocesan informative process took place from 1948 to 1957. The cause was officially introduced in Rome on April 14, 1977, under the pontificate of Paul VI, whose father, Giorgio Montini, had been a close friend and collaborator of Tovini. On April 6, 1995, Pope John Paul II promulgated the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, declaring him Venerable.
Beatification and canonization
Recognition of a miracle and beatification by Pope John Paul II in 1998.
* The miracle: In view of his beatification, the Catholic Church examined and recognized as scientifically inexplicable the extraordinary healing of a nun that occurred in December 1952 in a monastery in Massa e Cozzile, Italy. The decree approving this miracle was promulgated by Pope John Paul II on December 18, 1997.
* The ceremony: Giuseppe Tovini was solemnly beatified on September 20, 1998, by Pope John Paul II during a Eucharistic celebration at the Mario Rigamonti Stadium in Brescia. This beatification took place on the occasion of the closing of the centenary of the birth of Pope Paul VI, who was from the same region and was deeply influenced by the spiritual and social legacy of Tovini.
