    Biography

The youth of Pierre-Joseph Cassant in Casseneuil and his entry into the Abbey of Sainte-Marie du Désert despite his learning difficulties.

Pierre-Joseph Cassant was born on March 6, 1878, in Casseneuil, in the Lot-et-Garonne department, into a family of fruit growers. The second child of the siblings, he grew up alongside his older brother Émile. He completed his studies at the boarding school of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Casseneuil, where severe learning difficulties appeared, linked to a persistent lack of memory. Despite these intellectual limitations, he was driven from the age of 14 by a deep desire to become a priest. His parish priest, Father Filhol, noting his attraction to silence and prayer, suggested he turn toward monastic life. He entered the Cistercian Abbey of Sainte-Marie du Désert on December 5, 1894, at the age of 16.

    Life and Work

The monastic life of Brother Marie-Joseph, his priestly ordination, and his heroic battle against tuberculosis.

Upon his arrival at the abbey, he was entrusted to Father André Malet, master of novices. Under the name Brother Marie-Joseph, he integrated perfectly into the community, appreciated for his gentleness and constant joy. On May 24, 1900, he pronounced his perpetual vows. Despite his intellectual limitations, he overcame theological obstacles thanks to his tenacity and the guidance of Father Malet, and was ordained a priest on October 12, 1902. Already severely afflicted by tuberculosis, he endured his physical sufferings with heroic patience. He celebrated his final Mass on May 31, 1903, and passed away peacefully on June 17, 1903, at the age of 25.

    Beatification and canonization

The recognition of the miracle of the healing of Jean Delibes and the beatification of Pierre-Joseph Cassant by John Paul II in 2004.

The path to beatification opened thanks to the recognition of a miracle that occurred in May 1936: the sudden and medically inexplicable healing of Jean Delibes, a 9-year-old boy suffering from purulent bacterial meningitis, after his doctor prayed to Father Marie-Joseph Cassant. On December 5, 2002, the medical commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints concluded that the healing was scientifically inexplicable. The official decree on the miracle was promulgated on July 7, 2003. On October 3, 2004, Pope John Paul II celebrated the beatification of Pierre-Joseph Cassant in Saint Peter's Square in Rome.

    Spirituality and legacy

The spirituality of abandonment and simplicity of Pierre-Joseph Cassant, who became a model for people with learning difficulties.

The spirituality of Blessed Marie-Joseph Cassant is marked by an evangelical simplicity and a total abandonment to the love of God, close to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Guided by Father André Malet, he followed the "way of the Heart of Jesus," living fully in the present moment with patience and love. His example demonstrates that holiness is fully accessible to people who are fragile or burdened by learning difficulties. Today, he is invoked as a model and protector for students, people suffering from memory difficulties, and candidates for examinations.
