    Biography

Born in Paris in 1858 into an illustrious Polish family in exile, his childhood was marked by tuberculosis and spiritual education under the guidance of Joseph Kalinowski.

Blessed August Czartoryski was born in Paris on August 2, 1858, at the Hôtel Lambert, the residence of his family then in exile. He was the eldest son of the Polish prince Ladislas Czartoryski and the Spanish princess María Amparo Muñoz, daughter of Queen Maria Christina of Spain. His family, one of the most illustrious of the Polish nobility, had settled in France after the November Uprising of 1830 to continue diplomatic efforts on behalf of Poland. From his childhood, August's life was marked by illness. In 1864, his mother died of tuberculosis, a pulmonary condition she transmitted to him. His father remarried in 1872 to Princess Marguerite of Orléans, granddaughter of King Louis-Philippe I. Due to his fragile health, the young prince had to make frequent stays in health resorts across Europe and North Africa. From 1874 to 1877, his father chose Joseph Kalinowski (the future Saint Raphael Kalinowski) as his tutor, who exerted a decisive spiritual influence on him, initiating him into a life of intense prayer.

    Life and Work

Religious vocation with the Salesians despite family opposition, priestly ordination, and premature death in Alassio in 1893.

Despite his father's plans to destine him for a diplomatic career, August felt a deep calling toward religious life. The decisive event occurred in 1883 in Paris, during the visit of Saint John Bosco. Deeply impressed, August decided to enter the Society of Saint Francis de Sales. His entry met with opposition from his father and reluctance from Don Bosco due to his precarious health. August then sought the arbitration of Pope Leo XIII, who ruled in his favor. In June 1887, he renounced his rights of succession and entered the novitiate of Turin-Valsalice. On November 24, 1887, he received the cassock from the hands of Don Bosco. After the founder's death, he pronounced his vows on October 2, 1888. Despite the progression of tuberculosis, he continued his theological studies, supported by the Venerable Andrea Beltrami. On April 2, 1892, he was ordained a priest in San Remo by Bishop Tommaso Reggio. He spent the only year of his priestly ministry in Alassio, where he passed away on April 8, 1893.
