Jean-Bernard Rousseau was born on March 21 or 22, 1797, in Annay-la-Côte, in the Yonne (Burgundy). The eldest of four children of Bernard Rousseau and Reine Pelletier, he was baptized clandestinely during the Revolution. He grew up in Tharoiseau, received a solid Christian education from his parents and Abbé Petitier, and began teaching around 1819. Attracted by the education of the poor, he entered the novitiate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Paris on November 9, 1822, becoming Brother Scubilion. He pronounced his perpetual vows in 1827 and taught in mainland France for ten years.

He continued his work in La Possession and then in Sainte-Marie, where he passed away on April 13, 1867.
