Biography
Born in 1852 into a noble family of Palermo, Carolina Santocanale renounced the worldly customs of her milieu to embrace a life consecrated to the service of the poor.
Carolina Concetta Angela Santocanale was born on October 2, 1852, in Palermo, Sicily, and was baptized on the following October 4. She belonged to a family of the Sicilian nobility: her father, Giuseppe Santocanale, was a lawyer, and her mother, Caterina Andriolo Stagno, a deeply pious woman, played a decisive role in the child's spiritual formation. Carolina received a careful education at home, where tutors taught her literary, artistic, and musical subjects as well as French. From her adolescence, she felt the attraction of a consecration to God and, around the age of nineteen, confided her desire for religious life to her parents, to which her father was initially opposed. For about fifteen years, she led the Pious Union of the Daughters of Mary in her parish. In 1887, she settled permanently in Cinisi, in the province of Palermo, where the essential part of her work would unfold. She died in Cinisi on January 27, 1923, at the age of seventy, after a life entirely given to the most destitute.
Life and work
Established in Cinisi, she gathered a community there which became in 1909 the Congregation of the Capuchin Sisters of the Immaculate of Lourdes, dedicated to charity.
On June 13, 1887, Carolina entered the Third Order of Saint Francis and took the name Sister Mary of Jesus (Maria di Gesù). Settled in Cinisi, she gathered around her a few companions to serve the poor and the sick of the region. She opened an orphanage in 1896, then gradually developed a nursery school, a boarding school, and a sewing workshop, while teaching catechism and visiting the sick. Her community was aggregated to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin on December 8, 1909, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, becoming the Congregation of the Capuchin Sisters of the Immaculate of Lourdes, sometimes called the Tertiary Capuchins of Cinisi; Mary of Jesus was recognized as its founder in 1910. According to the sources of the cause, she had set for herself the program of becoming "educatrice, sorella di carità, madre dei poveri, pronta a eseguire qualsiasi ufficio, fosse anche il più umile" (educator, sister of charity, mother of the poor, ready to perform any task, even the humblest).
Journey toward holiness
Deeply marked by Franciscan spirituality and devotion to the Immaculate, she sought to be a servant of the poor in humility.
The spiritual life of Mary of Jesus is rooted in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, of whom she proclaimed herself a daughter, embracing evangelical poverty and the service of the least. Her devotion to the Immaculate Conception, which she placed at the heart of her congregation's identity, and her attachment to Our Lady of Lourdes guided all her actions. Her apostolate in Cinisi united evangelization and the human advancement of the poorest: according to the Archbishop of Monreale, she strove to bring to the most destitute populations "the material bread, the bread of the Word of God, and the Eucharistic Bread," an image of the three breads that summarizes her charity. Recognized during her lifetime for her dedication to the sick and orphans, she exercised a truly maternal tenderness toward abandoned children. Her reputation for holiness, founded on humility, simplicity of life, and the constancy of her service, persisted after her death and led to the opening of her cause for beatification.
Beatification and canonization
Declared Venerable in 2000, beatified in 2016, and canonized by Pope Francis on May 15, 2022, she is commemorated on January 27.
The process for the recognition of the holiness of Mary of Jesus culminated on July 1, 2000, with the promulgation of the decree declaring her Venerable, under the pontificate of John Paul II. On December 14, 2015, Pope Francis approved a first miracle attributed to her intercession: the survival without serious injury of a worker who fell approximately eleven meters onto hardened concrete in 2003, during construction work. Her beatification was celebrated on June 12, 2016, in the Cathedral of Monreale, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding over the ceremony as the envoy of Pope Francis. On November 25, 2021, a second miracle was recognized: the complete and unexplained healing of a young woman suffering from severe autoimmune conditions leading to infertility, who was subsequently able to give birth to two children. Pope Francis announced the canonization during the consistory of March 4, 2022, and inscribed Mary of Jesus Santocanale in the catalogue of saints on May 15, 2022, in St. Peter's Square, Rome. Her liturgical memorial is set for January 27, the anniversary of her death.
Spirituality and heritage
The congregation she founded continues her work of charity, and her tomb in Cinisi remains a place of veneration in Sicily.
The legacy of Saint Mary of Jesus Santocanale continues through the Congregation of the Capuchin Sisters of the Immaculate of Lourdes, elevated to the rank of a congregation of pontifical right on November 20, 1968, and still active in the service of the poor, the sick, and education. Her body rests in Cinisi, where her figure remains highly venerated, and her canonization in 2022 was celebrated with fervor in Cinisi, Palermo, and the Archdiocese of Monreale, of which she constitutes one of the great figures of contemporary holiness. Coming from the Sicilian aristocracy but resolved to become a "mother to the poor," she embodies an ideal of concrete charity and Franciscan humility that still inspires her spiritual daughters. Her example of service to the most destitute and her attachment to the Immaculate of Lourdes remain at the center of the spirituality transmitted by the institute she founded.
