Biography
Born in Secondigliano near Naples in 1791, Gaetano Errico became a priest in 1815 and exercised his ministry in his native parish until his death in 1860.
Gaetano Errico was born on October 19, 1791, in Secondigliano, then a village located north of Naples, in the Kingdom of Naples. He was the second of nine children of Pasquale Errico, who ran a modest pasta business, and Maria Marseglia, a weaver. Attracted to religious life at a very young age, he requested admission to the Capuchins and then to the Redemptorists around the age of fourteen, but he was turned away. He then entered the archiepiscopal seminary of Naples in 1808, attending classes as an external student and walking the distance to the city every day. He was ordained a priest on September 23, 1815. Assigned to the Saints Cosmas and Damian parish in Secondigliano, he taught there for about twenty years and dedicated himself to pastoral ministry in his native locality, which he would never leave for any extended period. A man of prayer and penance, he remained there until his death, which occurred on October 29, 1860, at the age of sixty-nine.
Life and Work
Following a vision attributed to Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Gaetano Errico founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
The work of Gaetano Errico was born, according to tradition, from a spiritual experience in 1818 during a retreat in Pagani: Saint Alphonsus Liguori is said to have appeared to him, inviting him to build a church and to found a new congregation. Errico had the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows built in Secondigliano, blessed on December 9, 1830, which became the cradle of his foundation. Around this church, he gathered companions and gave birth to the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, dedicated to the preaching of popular missions, spiritual retreats, and the ministry of reconciliation. The institute received ecclesiastical approval from the bishops in 1838, then royal approval in 1840, before obtaining the definitive pontifical approval of Blessed Pius IX on August 7, 1846. Errico directed the apostolate of his missionaries toward the proclamation of divine mercy, Eucharistic adoration, and devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Journey toward holiness
Errico was renowned for his tireless ministry in the confessional and his preaching of God's mercy, in opposition to Jansenist rigorism.
Gaetano Errico's reputation for holiness rests largely on his devotion to the sacrament of reconciliation. Reacting to the aftermath of Jansenist rigorism, he tirelessly preached the mercy of God and the forgiveness offered to sinners, exhorting his priests to welcome and lift up souls burdened by faults. He spent entire days in the confessional, which would later lead him to be described by John Paul II as a "true martyr of the confessional." His spirituality, centered on the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, united pastoral tenderness with great personal austerity. Attentive to the poor and the sick, he emphasized prayer, penance, and Eucharistic adoration as paths to conversion. His spiritual testament summarizes his thought in an exhortation to fraternal charity and fidelity to the Rule. It is this life of humility and apostolic zeal, recognized as heroic, that would open his canonization process.
Beatification and canonization
Declared Venerable in 1876, Gaetano Errico was beatified by John Paul II in 2002 and canonized by Benedict XVI on October 12, 2008.
The canonization process for Gaetano Errico was introduced during the pontificate of Leo XIII, who declared him Venerable in 1876 after the recognition of his heroic virtues. The cause led to his beatification, celebrated by Pope John Paul II on April 14, 2002, following the recognition of a miracle. His canonization was subsequently pronounced by Pope Benedict XVI on October 12, 2008, in Saint Peter's Square, during a celebration in which Marie-Bernarde Bütler, Alphonsine of the Immaculate Conception, and Narcisa de Jesús were also canonized. In his homily, Benedict XVI highlighted the dedication with which the priest Gaetano Errico devoted himself to his ministry, "with application, assiduity, and patience, never refusing or sparing himself." His liturgical feast is set for October 29, the anniversary of his death.
