Saint Caldeolus

Summary

Thirty-fourth Bishop of Vienne in the 7th century, Caldeolus (or Edalde) consulted Pope John V on liturgical differences in the Mass. The Sovereign Pontiff replied by confirming the attachment of the Church of Vienne to Roman customs and sent him relics of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

    Bishop Caldeolus questions Pope John V regarding liturgical divergences in the Mass.

    The response of John V

    The Pope explains the diversity of rites according to the apostolic cities while enjoining Vienne to follow the Roman custom.

    “John, bishop, to Edalde, archbishop of Vienne Edalde, archevêque de Vienne Bishop of Vienne in the 7th century. . Regarding the office of the Mass about which you have questioned us in your letters, let Your Charity know that it is performed in various ways, according to the churches: it is not performed the same in Alexandria as in Jerusalem, in Eph Rome Birthplace of Maximian. esus as in Rome. Your Church, which has received from that of Rome the foundations of a holy constitution, must follow its custom and discipline.
