Saint Tozzo, Bishop of Augsburg

Bishop of Augsburg in the 7th century, Saint Tozzo evangelized the Allgäu region in Swabia. He is known for supporting Saint Magnus in the founding of the monastery of Füssen and for a miracle during a pilgrimage where his torch remained lit despite rain and wind.

    Mission and evangelization

    Saint Tozzo dedicated his apostolic activity to the Algau region in Swabia, between Lake Constance and the Alps.

This is undoubtedly the reason why Saint Tozzo has been depicted with a torch in his hand. The legend gives this torch another meaning: it reports that while traveling to the tomb of Saint Gall and carrying a torch to light his way at night, the rain and wind could not extinguish it. It was upon returning from this pilgrimage that he led Saint Magnus, the first abbot of Fuescon, toward Bavaria. He was b uried in the church o église de Saint-Affre Burial place and site of the preservation of the relics of Saint Tozzo. f Saint Afra, where his relics still remain.
