THE VENERABLE ANNE OF JESUS (1621).
Historical account from the Petits Bollandistes
Anne de Lobère, in religion Anne of Jesus, was born in Medina-del-Campo, to an illustrious Spanish family, in 1545. She was deaf and mute until the age of seven. Barely ten years old, she pronounced the vow of perpetual chastity to thank the Lord for having granted her speech. She advanced so far in Christian piety that her confessor later testified to having never heard the confession of any great venial sin. She embraced Saint Teresa’s order at twenty-four years of age. After having founded various monasteries in Spain, Mother of Jesus was called, for the same purpose, to France and the Low Countries. In France, Carmelite houses multiplied rapidly; there were already sixty-two of them by the end of the 17th century. Anne of Jesus died in Brussels, in the odor of sanctity, on March 4, 1621, in her convent of Le Parc, near the Namur Gate.
