    Biography

Birth and youth of Raffaele Mennella in Torre del Greco, from a modest family, and his beginnings as a coral-working apprentice.

Raffaele Mennella was born on June 22, 1877, in Torre del Greco, in the province and diocese of Naples, Italy. He came from a large family of very modest means. His father, Antonino Mennella, earned his living as a fisherman, while his mother, Annunziata Manguso, was a housewife of solid and fervent faith, who played a decisive role in the Christian formation of her children. Although he showed great aptitude and a pronounced taste for study, Raffaele had to interrupt his schooling after obtaining his elementary certificate in order to help his family financially. He then entered as an apprentice in a coral-working workshop, a specialty of his hometown. In this work environment, he faced the mockery of his companions because of his piety, but he responded with gentleness and good example. Every day, before and after his work, he went to the Carmine church to participate in the celebrations and receive the Eucharistic blessing. Desirous of perfecting his education, he took free evening classes in Latin, history, and Italian from two priests of his parish, the brothers Luigi and Vincenzo Maglione.

    Life and work

Raffaele Mennella's entry into the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and his theological studies in Rome.

At the age of fifteen, Raffaele met Father Luigi Torrese, a member of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, an institute founded in Secondigliano by Saint Gaetano Errico. This meeting matured in him the desire to dedicate himself entirely to God. However, his first requests for admission to the congregation were rejected, due to the difficult political context of the time (the institute having been suppressed in 1861 and then painfully reorganizing) or his lack of financial resources. After being accepted by the Cistercians, he made one final attempt with the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts, which this time proved successful. On November 10, 1894, he began his novitiate in Secondigliano and received the religious habit on November 18. He pronounced his simple vows on November 21, 1895. On November 13, 1896, he received the clerical tonsure and minor orders. In September 1897, his superiors sent him to Rome to undertake theological studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University. During this Roman period, Raffaele lived his vocation intensely, dedicating himself to prayer, study, and charity, notably by regularly visiting the sick in hospitals.

    Journey toward holiness

Raffaele Mennella's illness, his return to Torre del Greco, and his edifying death at the age of 21.

On July 3, 1898, Raffaele's life changed when he suffered a severe hemoptysis, revealing advanced pulmonary tuberculosis, a disease that was incurable at the time. Anxious not to spread the disease among his confreres and desiring to die among his own, he was authorized to return to his family in Torre del Greco on August 2, 1898. During his painful agony, Raffaele edified all who approached him, including the priests who came to bring him the comfort of the sacraments, through his heroic patience, his serenity, and his total abandonment to the will of God. He passed away peacefully on September 15, 1898, at the age of 21. His funeral, marked by immense popular fervor, bore witness to the reputation of holiness he left behind. In 1956, his mortal remains were transferred to the Sanctuary of the Addolorata, adjoining the motherhouse of his congregation in Secondigliano (Naples).
