    Biography

The youth and religious formation of Félix Monasterio y Ateca, from his native Biscay to his studies in Rome.

Félix Monasterio y Ateca, known by his religious name Félix of the Virgin (Félix de la Virgen), was born on May 2, 1902, in the Altónaga farmhouse, attached to the municipality of Rigoitia (Errigoiti), in the province of Biscay, Spain. He came from a family of humble, deeply Christian farmers, Pedro Monasterio and Anastasia Ateca. On September 28, 1915, at the age of 13, he entered the college-aspirantate of the Trinitarian Fathers in Algorta to begin his religious formation. He received the habit of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives on October 3, 1919, at the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Bien Aparecida, in Cantabria. One year later, on October 5, 1920, he pronounced his first vows (simple profession) there. He was then sent to the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuensanta, in Villanueva del Arzobispo (province of Jaén), where he studied philosophy for two years. In 1922, he left for Rome as a conventual of the community of San Carlino alle Quattro Fontane. There, he continued his theology studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he obtained his doctorate in theology on October 18, 1926. In the meantime, he pronounced his solemn vows on December 25, 1923, in Rome and was ordained a priest on August 9, 1925, in the same city.
