    Biography

    Youth, education, and vocation of Luigia Lavizzari.

    Luigia Maria Elisabetta Lavizzari was born on October 6, 1867, in Vervio, Lombardy. The eldest of ten children, she grew up in a deeply Christian home. After studies at the Marcelline College in Vimercate, marked by a recovery from typhoid fever attributed to the Virgin Mary, she dedicated herself to catechism and the sick. Under the guidance of Monsignor Colturi, she entered the Benedictine monastery of Seregno in 1889.

    Sent to Arras in 1890 to learn French, she made her profession there under the name Sister Maria Caterina di Gesù Bambino. Upon returning to Italy, she became prioress of Seregno in 1900. In 1906, she transferred the community to Ghiffa. Supported by Father Celestino Colombo, she revitalized the order by sending nuns to restore or refound monasteries in Catania, Modica, and Piedimonte d'Alife.

    Mother Caterina passed away on December 25, 1931, in Ghiffa. Her reputation for holiness grew rapidly, and her remains were transferred to the monastery crypt in 1935. The diocesan informative process opened in Novara in 1956 and closed in 1959. The validity of the processes was officially recognized by Rome in 1988.

    Beatification and canonization

    The recognition of the heroic nature of her virtues by Pope Benedict XVI.

    The cause progressed with the publication of the Positio in 1995. On June 1, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the promulgation of the decree on the heroic nature of her virtues, officially declaring her Venerable. The recognition of a miracle is now required for her beatification.

    The Benedictine-Mectildian charism and the posterity of her work.

    Rooted in the Benedictine-Mectildian charism, her spirituality is centered on perpetual adoration and the spirit of reparation. Her motto was: 'Jesus-Host is our Paradise on earth'. Her teaching, transmitted through her letters and exhortations, bears witness to a joyful fidelity to daily duties. Her legacy endures today in Ghiffa.
