    Biography

    Youth and formation of Bernardo de Vasconcelos in Portugal.

    Bernardo Vaz Lobo Teixeira de Vasconcelos was born on July 7, 1902, in São Romão do Corgo (Portugal) into a deeply Christian family. Despite fragile health from childhood, he pursued brilliant secondary studies in Lamego and then moved to Coimbra. After considering a naval and then a commercial career, he enrolled in law at the University of Coimbra in 1922. There, he distinguished himself through an intense Catholic commitment, notably within the Academic Center for Christian Democracy (CADC) and the Conferences of Saint Vincent de Paul.

    Entry into the Order of Saint Benedict and onset of illness.

    Feeling a deep religious calling, Bernardo entered the postulancy of the Benedictine monastery of Singeverga in 1924, then completed his novitiate at the Abbey of Samos in Spain under the name Frei Bernardo da Anunciada. Sent to Belgium to study theology, he was quickly struck by Pott's disease (spinal tuberculosis). Forced to return to Portugal, he courageously continued his theological studies and pronounced his solemn vows in 1928, although his illness prevented him from reaching priestly ordination.

    Afflicted with a particularly painful bone tuberculosis, Bernardo de Vasconcelos endured multiple operations and physical sufferings which he offered for the Church and the salvation of souls. Bedridden during his final years, he transformed his ordeal into a spiritual offering, describing himself as a "blood host." He passed away holily on July 4, 1932, in Foz do Douro, at the age of 29, bearing witness to an unalterable joy and peace.

    Bernardo's reputation for holiness spread rapidly after his death, leading to the transfer of his remains to his native village in 1933. His cause for beatification, opened in the Archdiocese of Braga, reached a major milestone on June 14, 2016, when Pope Francis signed the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, declaring him Venerable. In 2023, he was designated patron of the youth of the Archdiocese of Braga for the WYD in Lisbon.
