    Biography

The youth of Angela Giorgi, marked by poverty, domestic work, and miraculous healings that guided her toward religious life.

Maria Angela Giorgi (in religion Sister Maria Eleonora) was born on January 16, 1882, in the hamlet of Coniale di Scheggiano (or Scheggianico), located in the municipality of Firenzuola, near Florence, Italy. She was the second of twelve children of Gaspare (or Gaspero) Giorgi, a modest farmer, and Maria Montefiori. She grew up in a poor but deeply Christian family environment, in the country house called "Bruscaia." She learned to read and write from a lady in her locality, while her father taught her arithmetic.

In her adolescence, in 1897, her parents sent her to work as a domestic helper in Florence for a high-society lady, Eleonora Zimmerman. A few months later, she contracted typhoid and was at the point of death. According to biographical accounts, the Virgin Mary appeared to her then, promising her healing on the condition that she consecrate herself to God. Angela recovered, but upon returning to her family in Firenzuola, the material needs of her household prevented her from fulfilling her promise immediately.

Returning to Florence to work in the service of the Budini Gattai family (related to the Zimmermans), she fell seriously ill again, this time with tuberculosis. Hospitalized in Firenzuola and once again near death, she received a second grace of healing after renewing her commitment to consecration. Her parents, marked by these successive trials, then accepted her entry into religious life.

    Life and Work

Angela's commitment within the Servite Sisters of Mary of the Addolorata and her responsibilities as Superior General.

On October 18, 1902, Angela entered the Congregation of the Servite Sisters of Mary of the Addolorata of Florence (Suore Serve di Maria Santissima Addolorata di Firenze). She received the religious habit on January 9, 1904, under the name Sister Maria Eleonora of the Holy Magi, in tribute to her benefactress Eleonora Zimmerman, who had helped her prepare her religious trousseau. She took her temporary vows on December 30, 1905, and her perpetual vows on December 30, 1915.

During her early years of religious life, she held various positions within the institute: - In 1906, she was a work mistress (sewing and embroidery) in Campi Bisenzio. - In 1908, she held the same position in Castiglione dei Pepoli, where she became the community superior in August 1913. - From 1917 to 1920, during the First World War, she was appointed superior in Calenzano and also devoted herself to assisting severely wounded war veterans in Florence.

In 1928, she was elected the eleventh Superior General of her congregation, a position she held until 1940. During her tenure, she oversaw the spiritual and material development of the institute. In 1939, she answered the call of Father Amadio Tinti to assist the monastery of Budrio, which was then on the verge of extinction. She sent five young sisters there to care for the elderly nuns and to establish a nursery school (Scuola Materna Sacro Cuore).
