At the age of 13, in 1890, he suffered a severe nosebleed (epistaxis) which left him lastingly weakened by chronic pernicious anemia. In October 1892, he had a decisive encounter with Luigi Orione in Tortona. Following his advice, he pursued brilliant secondary studies in Genoa, then university studies in Turin, obtaining his degree in literature and philosophy in July 1901. On December 8, 1901, he received the clerical habit in Tortona and was ordained a priest on September 6, 1903, becoming the first professed member of the Congregation of the Sons of Divine Providence.
