    Biography

    Youth, studies, and conversion of Giorgio La Pira.

    Giorgio La Pira was born on January 9, 1904, in Pozzallo, Sicily. The eldest of six children, he continued his studies in Messina starting in 1914 with his uncle Luigi Occhipinti. On Easter Day 1924, he experienced a profound spiritual conversion. He moved to Florence in 1926, where he obtained his doctorate in law and became a member of the Dominican Third Order in 1927 under the name Fra Raimondo. In 1933, he obtained the chair of Roman law at the University of Florence, and from 1936, he chose to live in a cell at the Dominican convent of San Marco.

    In 1934, Giorgio La Pira founded the Mass of the Poor at San Procolo to support the most destitute. After the war, he participated in the drafting of the Italian Constitution and became Undersecretary of State for Labor. Elected mayor of Florence (1951-1957, 1961-1965), nicknamed the "saintly mayor," he rebuilt the city, protected jobs, and worked for international peace by traveling to Moscow, China, and Vietnam.
