Biography
Birth of Filippo Lo Verde in Tunisia, his family's return to Palermo, his pious and joyful childhood, and the birth of his Franciscan religious vocation.
Filippo Lo Verde was born on December 20, 1910, in Tebourba, Tunisia, into a family of Sicilian emigrants who had settled there for work. His father was a mason and his mother ran a grocery store. He was the youngest of twelve children. In 1911, when he was only a few months old, his parents decided to return to Palermo, in Sicily (Italy).
He grew up in a deeply Christian home, where he was introduced from a very young age to the prayer of the Rosary, daily Mass, and the truths of the Catholic faith. He received his First Communion and Confirmation at the age of six. A particularly lively, mischievous, and joyful child, he loved to run, jump, and climb trees. However, he also manifested an early predisposition for solitary and silent prayer, marveling at the beauty of nature.
At the age of twelve, he firmly expressed his desire to become a religious priest. His parents first directed him toward the altar server group at the Cathedral of Palermo, then to the Oratory of San Filippo Neri, but he felt that his place was elsewhere. One day in 1922, after reading half of a biography of Saint Francis of Assisi, he exclaimed: "Enough, this is my place!". While his father easily accepted this vocation, his mother, very attached to her youngest son, initially opposed it. Filippo finally obtained her consent by leaving a touching letter under her plate on her name day. When asked about his motivations, he simply replied: "I am becoming a religious to become a saint."
Life and Work
Entry into the seminary of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, taking the habit under the name of Fra Luigi, studies, struggle against illness, and premature death at the age of 21.
On October 15, 1922, Filippo entered the Seraphic College (seminary) of the Friars Minor Conventual in Mussomeli, in the province of Caltanissetta. On January 21, 1923, he received the Franciscan habit and took the religious name of Fra Luigi (Brother Louis). He completed his secondary studies there before being transferred to the Santa Maria delle Grazie college in Montevago to finish his curriculum. In the spring of 1926, when he was only sixteen years old, the first symptoms of a serious illness appeared: a severe form of oligoemia (anemia) accompanied by intolerable headaches and loss of appetite. Forced to return temporarily to his family for treatment, he recovered sufficiently to begin his novitiate in Montevago on December 7, 1926. He made his temporary religious profession on December 8, 1927. Returning to Mussomeli for his philosophy studies, he went through a painful period of spiritual aridity, marked by nightmares and intense temptations, which he overcame through absolute trust in the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary. In November 1928, he was transferred to the convent of Noce in Palermo to complete his philosophy studies. Despite the persistence of his illness, he began his theology studies at the archiepiscopal seminary of Palermo in October 1929. Although his declining health prevented him from taking exams, he experienced two moments of profound spiritual joy in 1931: he received the clerical tonsure on February 28, and then the first two minor orders on May 30. On October 15, 1931, while visiting his parents in Palermo, he suffered a malaise and was forced to take to his bed permanently. During his last four months of life, he offered his sufferings in union with the Passion of Christ. He passed away peacefully on the evening of February 12, 1932, in Palermo, at the age of 21, clutching his crucifix and whispering: 'How sweet is the passage to Heaven!'
Path to holiness
Posthumous reputation for holiness, opening of the diocesan inquiry in Palermo, transfer of his mortal remains, and examination of the Positio.
The reputation for holiness of Friar Luigi Lo Verde spread rapidly after his premature death, particularly among the youth and the members of his order. His cause for beatification was officially opened at the diocesan level in Palermo. The diocesan inquiry took place from March 30, 1985, to October 19, 1988, during which twenty-seven witnesses were heard.
On May 16, 1992, his mortal remains were exhumed from the Sant'Orsola cemetery and solemnly transferred to the Chapel of the Immaculate in the parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at la Noce (Sacro Cuore di Gesù alla Noce) in Palermo, where they now rest in a marble tomb.
The legal validity of the diocesan inquiry was recognized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on February 21, 1992. The Positio, completed in 1997, was examined by the theological consultors on May 8, 2014, who voted unanimously in favor of the heroicity of his virtues.
Beatification and canonization
Promulgation of the decree recognizing his heroic virtues by Pope Francis in 2016, conferring upon him the title of Venerable.
On June 14, 2016, Pope Francis received in a private audience Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the heroic virtues of Luigi Lo Verde, thereby conferring upon him the title of Venerable. For his beatification to be pronounced, a miracle attributed to his intercession must be officially recognized by the Holy See. His cause is currently still ongoing.
Spirituality and legacy
Christocentric, Eucharistic, and Marian spirituality, inspired by the little way of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, and contemporary commemorations.
The spirituality of Luigi Lo Verde is deeply Christocentric, Eucharistic, and Marian. He distinguished himself by a scrupulous respect for the Franciscan Rule and his vows of obedience and poverty. During his final years, he was strongly inspired by the "little way" of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, living in a confident and serene abandonment to the divine will in the very heart of illness. He was accustomed to ending his days with a long silent prayer, kneeling at the foot of his bed. At the end of his life, he liked to repeat that he relied on his "three blessed weapons": the Crucifix, the Rosary, and the Rule. His brief but intense life remains a testimony of faith for contemporary youth. On February 12, 2026, on the occasion of the 94th anniversary of his death, a solemn mass was celebrated in his memory in the church of the Sacred Heart at la Noce in Palermo, presided over by the provincial minister of the Conventual Friars Minor, recalling that holiness is not a matter of years, but of intensity of love.
