Exhausted by incessant work and the political and social tensions of the 'years of lead' in Italy, Msgr. Bartoletti suffered a serious cardiac event during the night of March 1 to 2, 1976. Hospitalized urgently at the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome, he received the last sacraments there and died of cardiac arrest on the morning of Friday, March 5, 1976, at the age of 59. After solemn funeral services at the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome and then at the Cathedral of Florence, his body was transferred to the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca, where he rests alongside his predecessor, Msgr.
