Maria de Lourdes Guarda was born on November 22, 1926, in Salto, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The second of three children of Innocêncio Guarda and Júlia Froner Guarda, she grew up in a modest and pious family. Baptized on February 12, 1927, she made her first communion in 1934.
