    Biography

Birth in Florence, impoverished youth, and marriage to Giovanni Lapini.

Marianna Fiorelli (Anna or Annina) was born on May 27, 1809, in Florence in the Santa Croce district. The fifth of eleven children of Giuseppe Fiorelli, a barber, and Rosalinda Pecorai, a milliner, she grew up in a pious family. Desiring to dedicate herself to God, she was refused by several convents for lack of a dowry. On February 18, 1833, she married Giovanni Lapini. Despite her husband's initial vices, she obtained his conversion before his premature death in 1842, leaving her a childless widow at 33.

During the cholera epidemic of 1854, her dedication earned her the nickname "Mamma di Firenze". She pronounced her vows in 1855, received the provisional approval of Pius IX, and collaborated with Ludovico da Casoria for the education of young African girls.
