Biography
The life of Aniela Justyna Godecka-Kostka, from her birth in Russia to her death in Częstochowa, including her conversion and religious vocation.
Aniela Justyna Godecka-Kostka (in religion Maria Róża od Niepokalanego Poczęcia NMP / Mary Rose of the Immaculate Conception) was born on September 13, 1861, in Korczew on the Volga, Russia, into a wealthy Polish noble family. She was the daughter of Jan Godecki and Natalia Bachtysto. Having lost her mother at the age of five, she grew up in an atmosphere of fervent Catholic faith. In 1874, she entered the Nicholas I Institute in Moscow, from which she graduated as a teacher in 1882. She then began working as a private tutor for Polish families, first in Minsk (present-day Belarus), and then in Vilnius (present-day Lithuania) starting in 1885. In Vilnius, she came into contact with the socialist movements of the time. Faced with a feeling of inner dissatisfaction and a spiritual crisis, she began a profound path of conversion in 1886. Desiring to dedicate herself to God, she was admitted in September 1887 to the postulancy of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Most Pure Heart of Mary (Córki Najczystszego Serca Maryi), a community without a habit founded by the Capuchin father Honorat Koźmiński. In 1888, during a spiritual retreat in Zakroczyn, Blessed Honorat Koźmiński asked her to found a new religious community specifically dedicated to the spiritual and material support of factory workers. After an inner struggle, she accepted this mission, seeing it as the divine will. She settled in Warsaw and, on October 4, 1888, became the first novice and co-founder of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She pronounced her first vows on September 17, 1890, and her perpetual vows on March 26 or 27, 1891. In 1895, she received her definitive religious name: Maria Róża od Niepokalanego Poczęcia NMP. After residing in Włocławek (1900-1902), she settled in Nowe Miasto nad Pilicą in February 1902 to assist Father Koźmiński as his secretary. After his death in December 1916, she moved permanently to Częstochowa in 1917. It was there that she passed away on October 13, 1937, following a serious illness.
Life and Work
The foundation and development of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the support of female workers.
The life of Aniela Róża Godecka is inseparable from the foundation and development of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Zgromadzenie Małych Sióstr Niepokalanego Serca Maryi, commonly known as the 'Honorate' sisters or 'factory sisters'). The congregation was founded in the context of the Industrial Revolution of the late 19th century to evangelize and support the working class, particularly women working in factories. Due to persecution by the Tsarist police under the Russian Empire, the community adopted a clandestine character without a distinctive religious habit (secular congregation/without habit). Aniela organized the congregation into three distinct branches to adapt to social realities: 1. Sisters living in community. 2. Affiliates, who take temporary vows while continuing to work directly in factories. 3. Associates (aggregated), who live in the world as tertiaries without taking vows. Elected Superior General during the first general chapter in 1900, she led the congregation until 1920. Although her re-election in 1920 was annulled due to the excessive length of her term, she continued to serve as a counselor before being elected Superior General again from 1931 to 1937. Under her leadership, the sisters opened homes for unemployed female workers, provided vocational training, created schools for children, offered medical care, and organized daily meal distributions for the most destitute.
Path to holiness
The diocesan process and the transfer of the relics of Aniela Róża Godecka to Częstochowa.
After her death in 1937, the reputation of holiness of Aniela Róża Godecka spread rapidly among the faithful and the Polish working class. The process for her beatification began officially several decades later, slowed by the upheavals of the Second World War and the communist era in Poland. On August 18, 1994, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints granted the nihil obstat for the opening of the diocesan inquiry in the diocese of Częstochowa. On March 26, 1998, her mortal remains were exhumed from Saint Roch Cemetery and solemnly transferred to the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in Częstochowa, where they now rest. The diocesan inquiry was validated by the Vatican, paving the way for the examination of the Positio on her virtues.
Beatification and canonization
The recognition of heroic virtues by Pope Francis in 2021, declaring her venerable.
On June 19, 2021, Pope Francis received in audience Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing the inherited and heroic virtues of the Servant of God Angela Rosa Godecka. By this act, she is officially declared venerable. For her beatification to be pronounced, the official recognition of a miracle attributed to her intercession is required by the Catholic Church. To this day, no miracle has been the subject of a decree of approval, and the cause is ongoing.
Spirituality and Heritage
A Eucharistic and Marian spirituality, centered on the theology of work and the dignity of working women.
The spirituality of Aniela Róża Godecka is deeply Eucharistic and Marian, centered on the contemplation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the mystery of the Incarnation. She drew from the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament the strength necessary to carry out her social apostolate. She is one of the great promoters of the 'theology of work' in Poland. For her, work is not a curse, but a means of personal sanctification and collaboration in the work of God. She repeated that 'every honest and persevering work is a path to holiness.' Today, she is considered an informal patroness of workers and the unemployed. Her legacy endures through the Honorate Sisters (Little Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary), who continue to work without a habit in professional environments and among the working classes in Poland and abroad. Her autobiography, published recently, testifies to her pioneering struggle for the dignity and rights of women at work.
